Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple is located in Dindigul near the Begampur Water Body. The Temple is built to the rear of the Dindigul Fort. In ancient times this Temple of Sri Kottai Mariamman was fondly known as Sri Dhindeeswaram and during that time there was only a small Peedam and a Deity of Sri Kottai Mariamman. Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple has a Welcome Arch through which Devotees could enter the Temple premises. In all, this Temple has three entrances and all the entrances are open only during festive occasions. There is a multi pillared Gopuram on top of which there are few coloured stucco Idols of different Gods and Goddesses. The Temple has a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam facing the Moolasthanam. It is the habit of the Devotees to offer Turmeric and Salt at this place so that their Wishes are fulfilled sooner than later.
The Presiding Deity of this Temple is obviously Sri Kottai Mariamman who is considered as an incarnation of Goddess Sakthi. She Blesses Her Devotees from the Sanctum Sanctorum. In the Moolasthanam Sri Kottai Mariamman looks awexome and majestic with 8 hands. She is seen holding a Snake, a Trident, a Skull, a Bell, a Bow, a Bowl and Weapons in these hands. The sight of Goddess Kottai Mariamman looks resplendent and formidable. It is the habit of the Devotees to carry the Fire Pots and Maavilakku in memory of Goddess Kottai Mariamman. This Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Vinayagar, Sri Madurai Veeran, Sri Muneeswaran, Goddess Kaali and Goddess Durgaa. The Temple has an exclusive Navagraha Sannadhi. This Temple is considered as Kula Deiva Temple for many Devotees who reside in and around Dindigul District. Though there are conflicting versions about the origin of this Temple many believe that it was built during the times of Tippu Sultan and his Army. Some say that there is a Tunnel or Passage leading from here to Palani. Issueless Couple who come and pray here are believed to be Blessed with a wonderful child. This Temple celebrates a twenty day annual festival every year and nearly 20 lakhs Devotees visit this Temple at that time.
