Shri Alopi Devi Temple is also known as Shri Alopi Devi 51 Sakthipeetha Mandir. Prayagraj is the modern name of Allahabad. The location of the Temple is in Alopi Bagh which is very close to the Triveni Sangam or the Confluence where River Ganga, River Yamuna and River Saraswathi join together. Shri Alopi Devi Temple is one among the 51 Sakthi Peethas and it is said that the right hand Palm of the Presiding Deity of Goddess Alopi Devi or Goddess Sati fell but soon vanished and hence the word Alop or Alopi. It is said that the right Palm fell into a Divine or Sacred Water Body and disappeared totally. Shri Alopi Devi in other words means and includes a Virgin Goddess who has disappeared.
The Hallmark of this Temple is that there is no Idol of the Presiding Deity of Shri Alopi Devi in the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum but instead there is a Silver Plated Wooden Jhula or a Wooden Swing which is hung in the Sanctum Sanctorum and this is considered on par with the Presiding Deity and thus revered. This Divine Jhula or Swing is seen hanging over a small water pit. Initially the Marathas under Shrinath Mahadji Shinde upgraded this Temple during 1771 and 1772 but later it was Maharani Baizabai Scindia who took up massive renovation work during the 1800s.
This Temple has exclusive Sub Shrine for Shri Nava Durga depicting the 9 Avathars or Forms of Goddess Durga Devi. There is a Sub Shrine for Shri Ganesh who is considered to remove all the obstacles and the negative thoughts of His Devotees. There is also a Sub Shrine for Shri Lalitheshwar Mahadev who is another form of God Shiva and He is worshipped here as Shri Bhairava who is seen as a Guardian Deity safegurading the interests of Allahabad or Prayagraj. There is also an exclusive Sub Shrine for Shri Hanuman Ji who is considered as Omnipotent.
This Temple has two distinct entrances through which Devotees can enter the Temple. The Temple's peripheral has lovely coloured Images or semi Idols which would give the Devotees a 3D Effect and would be eyecaptivating. Meticulous care had been taken to make these colourful Idols as gorgeous as it could be to make them look more lively.
Male Devotees can enter the Temple either with Pant or Dhoti while Female Devotees are allowed with a Saree, Salwar Kameez with Duppatta. Navarathri, Maha Shivarathri are some of the important festivals. This Temple becomes too busy and crowded during the Kumba Mela and Maha Mela Days. This Temple is also imporant for the Mundan or Tonsuring ceremony on the first birthday of a child.
