Shri Durga Mata Temple is also known as Shri Durga Devi Mandir or Durgakund Temple. Some mention this Temple as Monkey Temple and in fact there are a lot of Monkeys within this Temple Premises. It is located in C14/160-36-A, Durgakund, Naipokhari, Chetganj / Bhelupur, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and is visited all through the year by Devotees coming to Varanasi. It is believed that Rani Bhabani of Natore had built this Temple way back in the 18th Centuury. The Temple has a captivating style of architecture pertaining to the North Indian Nagara and due to this the entire Temple looks resplendent in red colour since its has been built using red stones in those days.

There is a story behind the origin of this Temple which says that the King of Kashi known as Kashi Naresh called for a Swayamvar of his daughter Sashikala. Then he knew that his daughter was in love already with a Vanvashi Prince and hence got her married to him secretly. Knowing this, the other Kings who were invited for the Swayamvar went on to wage a war on Kashi Naresh. The King therefore Prayed to Goddess Durga Devii who fought the War in disguise for the King and eventually won it for him. After this episode Goddess Durga Mata stayed here and started protecting Varanasi from then on. Hence the Presiding Deity of this Temple is invariably Shri Durga Devi who is considered as a Goddess of Power and Strength.

Devotees coming to this Temple make it a habit to take a holy dip or holy bath in the Durga Kund Sacred Tank which is considered to be very Divine. Navarathri days are very special  here and during that time the entire Temple is lit with illuminated Lights and decorated with flowers befitting its beauty. Any visit to Varanasi is incomplete if this Temple of Shri Durga Devi is not visited, such is the Might and Power of this Temple. Male Devotees are allowed to wear Pants Dhotis and Shirts while the Female Devotees are let in with Saree, Salwar Kameez with Dhupataas. Mobile Phones and Cameras are strictly not allowed within this Temple.
