Shri Hanuman Garhi Temple is also known as Shri Hanuman Garhi Mandir and it is located on a small hillock like high mound in Sai Nagar within Ayodhya City. This Temple has been built on the banks of River Sarayu and gains significance since Ayodhya happens to be the birth place of Shri Ram. It is a fort like hilltop structure and there is a firm belief that this Temple has to be visited first before going to Shri Ram Janma Bhumi Temple in Ayodhya. It is said that this Temple was built during the 10th century and that the Fort around this Temple was built and fortified during the 18th century. In all the Devotees visiiting this Temple of Shri Hanuman may have to climb around 76 steep steps to reach the level of the Temple Premises.
This Temple is considered as the second most important Temple in Ayodhya after Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Temple. It is believed that after the Sri Lankan War between Shri Ram and Ravana, Hanuman ji came to Ayodhya along with the victorious Shri Ram and Goddess Seetha. From then on Shri Hanuman is believed to have started living in a Cave to protect Ayodhya. King Vikramadithya is then said to have built a Hanuman Garhi here along with several other Temples. Later Aurangazeb destroyed it and built a Mosque but eventually now the Hindu Temples have come to survive.
Shri Hanuman Garhi Temple is designed and built like a four sided Fort with circular ramparts at each corner. The Sanctum Sanctorum or the Garba Griha is beautifully built with silver carvings and it has three intricately designed doors leading to it. Within this there is a six inch Idol of Shri Hanuman who is portrayed as a Youth in His Bal form and made to sit on the lap of His Beloved Mother Anjanai. He is adorned and Garlanded with a Silver Tulsi garland. The hallmark of this Temple is that they have installed and erected a Vijay Stambh or Victory Pillar. Almost all the inner walls of the Temple bear the inscriptions of the Divine Hanuman Chalisa. At the foothills of this Temple are several rows of shops selling sweets, savouries, Divine Souvenirs, flowers, garlands and fruits etc. Since this Temple is in close proximity to the Shri Ram Mandir it draws almost the same number of Devotees on a daily basis. Hence there is almost a stampede like situation for the Devotees when the climb uphill on the steps. Shri Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanthi are celebrated with great fanfare. Male Devotees are allowed to wear Pant Dhotis and Shirts while the Female Devotees are allowed to come in Sarees, Salwar, Kameez with Dhupattas. Mobile Phones are not allowed here for the Devotees.
