Shri Varahi Devi Temple is also known as Shri Varahi Mandir and is located on Dashashwamedh Ghat near the Man - Mandir Ghat. This is an underground Temple which is dedicated to the Presididng Deity of Goddess Varahi and it is located in one of the narrow lanes or gali of Varanasi. Devotees may have to queue up her right from morning on the bylane itself despite rain and sunshine since the Temple is closed for the day after 9.30 AM. While there is a general belief that Shri Kaal Bhairav watches Kashi all through the day its the Goddess Varahi Devi who guards Kashi all through the night and hence She is referred as the Nocturnal God.
This Goddess Varahi Devi is the Presiding Deity of this Temple and She is considered as a Swayambhu Idol and its one of the rarest Deities since She is located in the Paathaal Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple. Despite the fact that this Varahi Temple is opened for the Devotees only for a few hours in the morning there is a steady inflow of Devotees then the Temple is kept open in the forenoon session of the day. Devotees wishing to come to this Temple to Pray have to stand in long queue which wades through several narrow lanes and galis before they enter the Temple premises. Devotees who reach the Temple have to view and Pray the Presiding Deity of Shri Varahi Devi through a gaping hole or through a small opening of the marble slab. There is always the normal Pooja that is done regularly and no special Poojas for any Devotees whatsoever.
Though all days of the year is the same for this Temple Navarathri days draw enormous number of Devotees here from all nook and corner of India since She is considered to guard all Her Devotees from all the evil forces. There is a firm belief that worshipping Goddess Varahi Mata will naturally add strength, protection, and the courage in their day to day life to face all challenges in real life. The most improtant factor of this Temple is that its only the Purohit who is allowed to enter the Paathal Sanctum Sanctorum to offer Poojas and no Devotee is allowed to enter there. Male Devotees are allowed to come here with traditional dress whereas the Female Devotees can come either in Sarees or Salwar Kameez with Shawl. Mobile Phones and Photography is never encouraged within the Temple premises of Shri varahi Devi in Varanasi.
