In ancient days this place was full of Iluppai Trees and hence this place would have been called as Iluppur. There are inscriptions dating back between the period 1190 and 1244 and hence it is presumed that this was the period when this region might have been ruled by Kings Kulasekara Pandiyan and Sundara Pandiyan etc. This Temple is East facing and has a small three tiered Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Ponvaasinathar and He is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This Lord is also called as Hema Virutheeswarar and Pon Valarchi Nathar. His Consort is in another Shrine which is South facing and in a standing posture and She is known as Swarnambigai. There is a 12 pillared Mandabam with Yaali statues on top of it. There is a Natarajar Sabai and Sub Shrines for Narthana Ganapathi, Naalvar, Veera Vinayagar, Lakshminarayanan, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Pushkala Samedha Iyyanaar, Sri Devi Bhoo Devi Samedha Maha Vishnu, Veerabhadrar, Arunagirinathar, Aathmalingam, Gajalakshmi, Chandikeshwarar, Dhakashnamurthy, Lingothbavar, Kongana Siddhar, Brahmma, Durgai etc. There is a Navagraha Sannadhi too. It is believed that Devotees visiting this Temple will get back their Stolen Jewels. Hence the Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Pon Vaasinathar. Prodosham, Maha Shivarathri, Thiru Karthigai are celebrated in a grand manner here.
