Thiruvannamalai is a small village located on the outskirts of Srivilliputhur. It is a picturesque village bordering the slopes of the Western Ghats. Tirumalai Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is a Vaishnavaite Temple located on a hill top in Thiruvannamalai Village. Devotees willing to go to this Temple have no other choice than by climbing around 247 steps. There is no motorable ghat road to reach the Temple premises. At the outset there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Karupannaswamy at the foothill of the Temple. Devotees ought to Pray to Him before they start climbing the stairs. After which there is an there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Adhi Vinayagar. It is said that the Idol of Sri Aadhi Vinayagar was excavated from the soil and this Sub Shrine came up after 1975. Next comes another East facing Sub Shrine of a small Vinayagar and there are several Idols of Naagars kept around Him beneath an Arasa Maram.
After climbing a few steps there is a South facing multi pillared Mandapam on the Gopuram of which are the coloured Idols of Sri Srinivasa Perumal and flanking Him on either side are the Idols of Sri Alarmermangai Thaayar and Sri Andal along with the Dasavathara Idols. A Thentirupathi Laddu Stall is seen within this Mandapam. They have provided a roof top all along the steps so that the Devotees are saved from the vagaries of Nature. They have also built shelters along the steps so that the tiring Devotees could pause for a while and take rest before they proceed further towards the Temple. While climbing these steps there is an Idol of Sri Sudharshana Chakkaram which is East facing. Opposite to this, is the Annadhana Koodam of the Temple. Close to the Annadhana Koodam is the Sub Shrine Sri Venugopala Perumal. The Idols of Sri Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana, Anjaneya Swamy, Sri Andal and the Idols of the Dasavatharam are also seen in the Sub Shrine premises of Sri Venugopala Perumal. Climbing the steps furthermore there is a multi pillared resting Mandapam in which a huge coloured drawing of Sri Srinivasa Perumal is seen East facing and opposite to this is another West facing coloured painting of Sri Ramar Pattabishekam. The pillars here are embellished with the Idols of Yaali and an Idol of Sri Garudalwar and Sri Anjaneya Swamy are seen at the base of the two pillars. Beyond this is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Alarmelmangai Thaayar who is seen on a Peedam beneath two Virukshams known as Kallichi and Brahmmachari. An Idol of Sri Baala Naagammai is seen closeby and the entire Sub Shrine has a temporary tin sheet roofing. It is also said that several Divine Serpants still live within these two Virukshams.
The steps leading to the Temple at this point is wide enough. There is a beautifully decorated coloure Gopuram beneath which three entrances are seen leading to the Temple. The Gopuram has coloured Idols of Sri Srinivasa Perumal flanked by Sri Alarmelmangai thaayar and Sri Andal who are seen with the Dasavathara Idols. This Gopuram leads to a multi pillared Mandapam wherein a Divine Stall selling all types of Souvenirs is seen. On circumambulating further there is a Stone Stambam. Devotees buy huge gigantic Sandals and place it before this Sthambam and Pray. There is a belief that the Perumal wears this Sandals and walks in the adjoining forest area. Therefore the Devotees lift this Sandal and keep them on their Shoulders and Head which implies that the Sandals used by Perumal has Blessed us by doing so. The Sanctum Sanctorum and the entire surroundings are beneath a huge multi pillared Mandapam. Facing the Moolasthanam is a Stone Dwajasthambam which is seen as though it is piercing the roof and going upwards. Next to it is a West facing Idol of Sri Garudalwar looking towards the Moolasthanam and close to this is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. There are two stone Paavai Vilakku on either side of the Moolasthanam and next to this is a threshold made of silver plated door on which the Ashtalakshmi Vigrahams are etched. There is another threshold before the Moolasthanam which is fully gold plated. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Thirumalai Sri Srinivasa Perumal is seen East facing and in a standing posture. He is considered as a replica of the Idol of Tirupathi Sri Venkatesa Perumal. Those Devotees who Pray to Tirupathi Sri Venkatesa Perumal but could not go there due to the distance or other unforeseen circumstances can come to this Temple and Pray before the Presiding Deity of Tirumalai Sri Srinivasa Perumal here. In the Moolasthana Mandapam there are four South facing Sub Shrines of 1) Sri Yoga Narasimhar, 2) Sri Bala Narasimhar, 3) Sri Navaneethakrishnan and 4) 3 Alwars. The Sub Shrine of Sri Navaneetha Krishnan also has Idols of Sri Venugopalar and Sri Vishvaksenar within it. If Devotees could still climb a little more after the Moolasthanam they can see the Divine Feet of Sri Srinivasa Perumal in the form of an Idol and close to the is another Divine pair of Feet made of Wood. A huge metallic gong is seen next to them. There is a huge Madapalli or Temple Kitchen on the hilltop. Tonsuring facilities are available at the foothill of the Temple.
The Yeomen Services of the Temple Purohit Sri Badri Bhattachariar has to be complimented in a very big manner for the way he conducts to Pooja and other Temple Rituals so precisely. This Temple attracts numerous Devotees particularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
