Rajapalayam is a very important place in Virudhunagar District. Sri Vettai Venkadesa Perumal Temple is located a few Kilometres away from Rajapalayam Bus Stand. This is a very ancient Temple which is several centuries old. This Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram which is East facing. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Vettai Venkatesa Perumal who is seen in His East facing Sanctum Sanctorum in a standing posture. Earlier there was no Thaayar Sannadhi but latter the Shrine of Sri Padmavathy Thaayar was added to this Temple. This Temple is similar to the Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Tiruvannamalai and Tirupathi since the Presiding Deity is seen alone and in a standing posture. The Presiding Deity of Sri Vettai Venkatesa Perumal is said to be of a very cool nature since it is believed that Noopura Gangai flows beneath His Feet in the Sanctum Sanctorum.
There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Karuppasamy just before the Rajagopuram and all Devotees visiting Sri Vettai Venkatesa Perumal Temple do come and Pray before Sri Karuppasamy to seek His Blessings. The location of the Temple is very close to a hillock called Sanjeevi Malai in Rajapalayam. There are several Wedding Halls close to this Temple where the locals perform their Wedding.
It is said that the post Pallava period was vulnerable with no Law and Order. At that time there lived a villager who was known as Namadhari since he had a Thirumaan and Srichurnam on his forehead. He stayed beneath a Tamarind Tree and it was the habit of Namadhaari to collect all the ripened Tamarind and sell it and donate the proceeds to Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Thiruvannamalai. As Namadhaari grew old he was weak and unable to move like before but still he collected the ripened Tamarinds with a view to donate the sale proceeds to Perumal. A thief appeared from nowhere, pushed down the Namadhaari and took away his Tamarinds. Namadhaari wept since he could not fight back in his old age but he was more concerned that he could not donate to Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Tiruvannamalai. While dozing that night God appeared in his dream and promised Namadhaari that He would restore his stolen Tamarinds. Confirming his dream a Horseman came there the next day and restored the lost Tamarinds of Namadhaari. This story was carried over by the villagers to the soliders and finally it reached the ears of the Ruler then. In accordance to the Orders of the local Ruler a small Temple was built in that place to make Namadhaari happy. Initially it was a very small Temple but the latter Rajus of Rajapalayam joined together and developed this Temple to a great extent. Now in recent days many consider that Sri Vettai Venkatesa Perumal would come in the form of a commoner and would vanquish all the evil doers. Vaikunda Ekadesi and Thirukalyanam are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple has a huge Pushkarani and some local Devotees refer this as Noopura Gangai.
