The Temple is located on the outskirts of Chennai in Kundrathur. The Presiding Deity is Lord Shiva as Kandhazheeswarar. His Consort here is Nagaimugai Valli. This Temple was constructed during the Chola Period around 1241 AD. In the later years Rulers of Vijayanagara Kingdom developed this Temple and cared for it. King Krishnadevaraya donated liberal financial grants to this Temple. The Pallava Rulers evinced great interest in this Temple and supported it and renovated it to a great extent. The Temple has a stamp of typical Dravidian Architechture. Divine Poet Sekkizhar was born in Kundrathur and so he took personal interest in this Temple and sang several hymns in praise of this Temple. There are Shrines for Ganapathy, Murugan, Valeeswarar, Dakshinamurthy, Linghothbhavar, Brahma, Chandikeshwarar, Durgai and Kala Bhairavar. There is a seperate Navagraha Sannidhi.  Idols of 63 Nayanmars who worked for the development of Shaivism  and devoted to Lord Shiva are kept here. These Nayanmargal induced Bakthi Movement in Tamil Nadu  to a great extent.  Kannappar idol too is found here. The Temple draws huge crowd during Pradhosham.  Special Poojas are done during Theipirai Ashtami  (Waning Days of Moon)  of Kala Bhairavar. Naga Devathas are much revered and kept under a Tree. The Main Deity of Kandhazheeswarar is kept on a Square Pedestal in the form of  a Lingam. Devotees from far and near visit this Temple in great numbers. Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri, Thei Pirai Ashtami are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
