  • Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple, Kundrathur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Kundrathur is a suburb of Chennai and this Temple is a Hill Top Temple having been built by King Kulothunga Cholan-II. It can be reached by foot for which they have built a cemented stair case and there are 85 steps to reach the Temple premises. A motorable road too is available for all private vehicles to reach the hill top. The famous Sage Sekkilaar was born in this place. During the Sekkizaar Guru Pooja Sri Murugan comes down from the hilltop Temple to grace the function. It is beleived that Sri Murugan stayed here for a while during his travel from Thiruporur to Thiruthani. On entering the Temple Premises there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ganapathy and He has to be Prayed first before the other Gods are Prayed.

The Presiding Deity is Sri Murugan who is called here as Sri Subramanya Swami. He is seen with His two Consorts Valli and Deivanai. It is the one and only Murugan Temple where Sri Murugan is seen standing facing North. Here its unique since Sri Subramaniyar can be seen just with one Goddess at any given moment despite the fact that he is there alongside both the Goddesses. If viewed from one angle Sri Murugan will be seen with Goddess Valli and if viewed from the opposite side, He can be seen alongside Goddess Deivayanai. It is said that this Sri Murugan Blesses all childless Couple and its a custom here that such Couple come back here and tie a Cradle after a child is born to them.

New Year, Krithigai  and  the Tamil Month Aadi & Karthigai Deepam attracts a lot of Devotees. This Temple is also referred as Then Thanigai  which means South Thanigai. It is also very famous for most of the Tamil Marriages happens to take place in this Temple. Head Tonsuring is done here. The Temple has a Madapalli or a Temple Kitchen and an Annadhana Koodam. Several Hindu Marriages are conducted here quite often.
