Shree Kal Bhairav Mandir is located on the Jail Road of Bhairavgarh in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. This is one of the busiest Temples of Ujjain where the crowd and Devotees are too much to handle. There are rows and rows of Shops on the way leading to the Temple selling all Pooja and Divine articles. Devotees intending to visit this Temple may have to tread through narrow barricades leading to a few hundred metres where the surface is full of mud, stones, slushy soil, potholes etc. Devotees may have to keep their cool and wait in the queue to reach the Temple of Shri Kal Bhairava. After several serpantine twists and turns there is a West facing entrance through which the Devotees are allowed to enter this Temple. 

There are around 30 to 40 steps for the Devotees to climb and reach the level of the Temple premises. While entering there is a huge stone lamp stand to the right where several hundreds of ail lamps can be lit to glow. Closeby is a huge Viruksh or a Sacred Tree. This Temple is built on the Bank of River Kshipra. The Temple's History dates back to more 6000 years ago. Initially this Temple was built by King Bhadrasen and has been explicitly mentioned in the Skanda Purana. Idols of God Shiva, Goddess Parvathy, Sri Maha Vishnu and Sri Ganesha were excavated.

The Presiding Deity is Shri Kaal Bhairava who is West facing and the Kothwal or the Guardian of Ujjain and hence He is considered as a Kshethrapal. Several centuries ago it is believed that an elderly lady came to Shri Kaal Bhairav with a Prayer and when she had nothing to offer Him, she willing offered a bottle of Liquor which she had, Sree Kaal Bhaivar willingly accepted her offering and gave her His Blessings. From that day on it is a practice that Liquor Bottles are Offered to God and is also sold outside the Temple premises. Devotees thus Offering such Liquor is accepted by the Poojari who transfers a portion of the Liquor to a Silver Saucer and takes it to the Lips of the Presiding Deity of Sree Kaala Bhairava. No sooner this is done the Liquor poured on the Silver Saucer vanishes and it is believed to have entered through a Slit / Lips. The remaining Liquor Bottle is then given back top the Devotees as a Prasada. In the West facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Shri Kaal Bhairav's Idol is seen in a facial form with a lot of vermilion and Kum Kum applied over it. Likewise the Presiding Deities Silver Head is beautifully adorned with a Maratha Style Pagdi or Turban. A black Idol of a Divine Dog is seen facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. 

It is noteworthy to mention here that the Presiding Deity found in the West facing Sanctum Sanctorum is seen with a Turban or a Pagdi. This practice is followed for several centuries since the Mahadaji Shinde Royal Family practised the Maratha style of headgear. The initial Temple which was razed down was rebuilt by the Marathas and hence many of the Architectures in the Temple follows the Maratha style. This Temple complex has several Dogs roaming around freely since they are considered as Vaahan of Sree Kaal Bhairav. Male Devotees can enter the Temple either wearing Pant, Shirt or Dhoti while Female Devotees can wear Salwar Kameez with Shawl or Saree.
