Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is located in a island place known as Mandhata in Khandwa District of Madhya Pradesh. Many others refer Mandhata as Omkareshwar Itself. River Narmada and River Kaveri are seen encircling the Temple premises for several kilometers making it a virtual island. Devotees need not confuse River Kaveri here to that of River Kaveri flowing in Tamil Nadu. It is said that an aerial view of this Temple and its surroundings would show that the Temple is resembles OM in shape. Tourists and Devotees coming to visit this Temple either by car or private bus etc have to park their vehicles at a particular place and hire an autorickshaw and reach another area from where Devotees have to walk on a rugged and slopy surface for quite some time. There are two ways to reach the Temple premises of Sri Omkareshwar. Devotees can opt for a boat ride and hire a boat and cross River Narmadha to reach the Temple. Otherwise they can cross a foot overbridge and can reach the Temple by walking the entire stretch thereby avoiding the boat ride across River Narmada. Devotees opting to take the paid boat ride can also have a glimpse of the Omkareshwar Dam that has been built across River Narmada. It is a common site to see several Devotees taking a bath in River Narmada since it is considered to be Holy.
At the outset there is a South West facing Temple Arch through which Devotees are lead towards the Temple. The Temple Authorities have designed a huge barricaded slopeway through which Devotees have to wade through serpentine queue to reach the Temple. Initially the Temple has a West facing Sub Shrine of Shri Kar Parvatheshwarar who is seen here as a Shivaling. To His rear is a white marble of Goddess Parvathy and facing Shri Kar Parvatheeswarar is a Nandhi Bhagwan. There is another West facing Sub Shrine of Shri Saneeswar Maharaj. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is the Omnipotent Shri Omkareshwar who is seen North facing and in the form of a Shivaling. The base of this Shivaling is partially immersed in natural water flowing out of it. It is believed that this Shivaling comprises of Sand and Clay and the Presiding Deity is said to have been installed by Shri Adi Shankara. Some Devotees refer Shri Omkareshwar as Shri Amaleshwar too. Facing the Presiding Deity of Sri Omkareshwar is a Nandhi Bhagwan. The exact origin of this Temple is still a mystery. Sanctum Sanctorum and the Presiding Deity are not placed in front of the main entrance door.
There is another white marbled solitary Nandhi Bhagwan who is seen East facing. There is another huge Sub Shrine for Shri Ganapathy. This Temple has a massive assembly hall of around 15 feet and supported by 60 mammoth pillars. On the whole this Temple comprises of 5 floors each of these floors have different Deities of Shri Omkareshwar, Shri Mahakaleshwar, Shri Siddhanath, Sri Guptheswar and the flag bearing Deity virtually at the top. This Temple conducts three daily Rituals through its Trust. The afternoon Ritual is done on behalf of the Scindia Family whereas the evening Ritual is on behalf of the Holkar Family. The entire stretch of pathway leading to the Temple is flooded with Shops seeling all Divine Articles and eatables.
It is heartening to note that huge massive Idol of Shri Adi Shankara has been installed close to the Temple since He was instrumental in bringing up this Temple to this extent. There are several prasad counters seeling Laddus and other Eatables. Senior Citizens and Physically Challenged Devotees are allowed to have the Darshan of Shri Omkareshwar through a special queue for which they are provided with an arm band. This Temple attracts huge number of Devotees from far flung areas during Dussehra, Basant Panchami, Saraswathi Pooja, Ekadesi, Pradosh Days, Holy, Guru Poornima, Maha Shivaratri and Makara Sankaranthi festival. The Devotees visiting this Temple can use the causeway bridge that is built to connect this Temple to the main land or can use the Boat Service to reach via River Narmada. Male Devotees can have Darshan wearing Pant, Shirt and Dhoti while Female Devotees are allowed with a Saree, Salwar Kameez and a Shawl.
