Sri Arudhra Kapaleeswarar Temple is situated in Erode Town in a busy market area and could be reached easily by foot from the Panneerselvam Park. Sri Arudhra Kapaleeswarar Temple faces East and has a 5 tiered Rajagopuram. At the outset there is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam looking West towards the Moolasthanam. Initially there was only a solitary Dwara Baalaka Idol and later another Dwara Baalaka Idol was added to make it a pair. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Arudhra Kapaleeswarar is East facing in the form of a Shiva Lingam and He is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Sri Arudhra Kapaleeswarar is also known by the names Sri Thondeeswarar, Sri Cheddeswarar and Sri Chozheeswarar. The Presiding Deity looks small but He is a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. Another unique factor is that the Swayambhu Shiva Lingam seen in the Sanctum Sanctorum has 108 Shiva Lingams embedded on it. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Brahmma and Vishnu Durgai. The Consort here is known as Sri Vaaranambigai bur some call Her as Varani Ambal. Sri Vaaranambigai Ambal is found Blessing Her Devotees from a separate Shrine.
Stucco Idols of Avinashi Shivan Temples, Oorthava Thandavamoorthy etc are seen on the pillars of the Maha Mandapam. It is believed that this Temple was built during the period of Kongu Cholan and Karikaal Cholan. It is sais that Sage Durvaasar installed the Presiding Deity of this Temple. The Temple has been built in such a way that the Sun Rays falls on the Moolavar on the 23rd and 27th of the Tamil Maasi Month. Past History tells us that the Idols of this Temple is offered a new cloth on any given day or in other words the Temple Admin never uses old clothes on the Deities. The Vanni Mara Vinayagar and the Idol of the Amman placed beside it draws much attention of the Devotees. The paintings of the 12 Raasis drawn on the ceiling of the Temple is eye captivating. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
