Sri Jalagandeshwarar Temple is located in the midst of Vellore Fort in Vellore. It is believed that there was a local Chieftan in those days during the Vijayanagara Kingdon and one day that Cheiftan had a wild dream in which he saw a Anthill covering a Swayambu Shiva Lingam in a place which was covered by Water then. He searched for this place immediately cleared the Anthill and brought out the Swayambhu Shiva Lingam and started building a Temple for Shiva. He named it as Sri Jalagandeswara since it was found beneath an Anthill surrounded with Water then. The Consort of this Temple was then called as Sri Akhilandeswari. So naturally this Temple had all the hallmarks of the Vijayanagara Rulers.
The Rajagopuram stood more than 100 feet tall and had all the inticate carvings of marked craftsmen. There were also multi pillared Mandapams in it. The Aghazhi or Moat around the temple made it resemble as though there was a Graland around this Temple. Tippu Sulthan and Hyder Ali were fascinated by this Temple that they attacked it many times and demolished it. Hence the local Devotees fearing the invaders removed the presiding deity of Sri Jalakandeswarar and Others to Sri Jalakanda Vinayagar Temple in Sathuvachari for safe custody. During that time, this Jalakandeswara Temple was almost closed virtually for around 400 years. Later all the shifted Deities were safely brought back to this Temple and normalcy was restored and Poojas were gradually resumed again. In the year 1981 Mailai Sundaram Guruji of Thangal Ashram brought back the Presiding Deity and installed it again inside this Temple. The Nandhi Vahaanam installed in this Temple faces the Moolasthanam and looks captivating. The Eartern Lamp seen close to the Nandhi Vaahanam is even more exciting to look upon.
The Presiding Deity of Sri Jalakandeswarar is believed to be Omnopotent and His Abhishekam is performed by fetching the water from a Divine Well known as Gowri Theertham. Pooja and other Divine Rituals was resumed again as usual from the year 1981/1982. The HR & CE of the State Govt looks after the Pooja Rituals while the ASI under the Govt of India takes care of the Temple premises. This Temple is one of the major landmark of Vellore City and it draws huge number of Devotees from far flung Areas. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
