The Presiding Deity is Sri Uthira Ranganathar who is an incarnation of Sri Maha Vishnu. His Consort is known as Sri Ranganayaki Thaayar. The Temple construction was initiated in the 5th Century and the Vijayanagara Kings had a big hand in its development. The Temple is built close to River Paalar. The Moolavar in the Sanctum Sanctorum is East facing and found in a Sayanakolam or Reclining Posture. Hence He is called as Sri Pallikonda Ranganathar. The Sayanakolam is known as Baala Sayanam which is closely guarded by the Divine Aadhi Seshan. The rear side of the Sanctum is spectacularly designed in a semi circular fashion. Sri Chota Ranga or Sri Kasthuri Rangan and Alwar Sannidhis are found close to the main Sanctum.
During the Moghul period when this area was invaded by Muslims the local people projected Sri Chota Rangan / Sri Kasthuri Rangan as the Main Deities thereby saving the Presiding Deity. Just outside the Moolavar Sannadhi they do have a Thulaa Bhaaram or a Weighing Scale facility for the Devotees offering purposes etc. Sri Ranganayaki Thaayar Blesses Her Devotees from a separate Shrine located in a Pillared Mandapam. Sri Rama along with Goddess Seetha and Sri Lakshmana occupies a Sub Shrine. Sri Krishna has a Sub Shrine of His own and He Blesses His Devotees. Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Sri Aandal Nachiyar too have Shrines for them. There are several stone Idols of Naga Devathas kept on the outer peripherals and hence this Temple is considered to be a Naga Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam. The Sthala Viruksham is a Paadha Rishi Tree and Praying here is said to bring harmony in married couples. There are Shrines for Saint Ramanujar and Sri Manavala Maamunigal which are located opposite to each other on entering the Temple. The Temple Tank or Pushkarani here is called as Vyasa Pushkarani and it is located just outside the Temple premises. Taking a Holy Dip in this Vyasa Pushkarani is believed to get rid of all tha physical ailments of all Devotees. The Temple has also got a new Chariot or a Temple Car for the past 3 years. Since Sri Uthira Ranganatha Swamy Temple or Sri Pallikonda Ranganathar Temple is located close to the Chennai Bangalore National Highway many travellers too visit this Temple other than normal Devotees. This Temple follows the Thengalai Tradition or Sampradhaya. The Temple is considered to be a Naga Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam.
