The Presiding Deity is Uthira Ranganathar who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His Consort is known as Ranganayaki Thayar. The Temple construction was initiated in the 5th Century and the Vijayanagara Kings had a big hand in its development. The Temple is built close to River Paalar. The Moolavar in the Sanctum Sanctorum is East facing and found in a Sayanakolam or Reclining Posture. The Sayanakolam is known as Baala Sayanam which is closely guarded by the Divine Aadhiseshan. The rear side of the Sanctum is spectacularly designed in a semi circular fashion. Chota Ranga / Kasthuri Rangan and Alwar Sannidhis are found close to the main Sanctum. During the Moghul period when this area was invaded by Muslims the local people projected Chota Rangan / Kasthuri Rangan as the Main Deities thereby saving the Presiding Deity.  Just outside the Moolavar Sannadhi they do have a Thulaa Bhaaram or a Weighing Scale facility for the Devotees offering purposes etc. Ranganayaki Thaayar Blesses Her Devotees from a separate Shrine located in a Pillared Mandapam. Lord Rama along with Seetha and Lakshmana occupies a Sub Shrine.  Lord Krishna has a Sub Shrine of His own Blesses His Devotees. Lord Anjaneya and Andal too have Shrines for them. There are several stone images of Naga Devathas kept on the outer peripherals and this Temple is considered to be a Naga Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam. The Sthala Viruksham is a Paadha Rishi Tree and praying here is said to bring harmony in married couples. There are Shrines for Saint Ramanujar and Manavala Maamunigal which are located opposite to each other on entering the Temple. There is a Vyasa Pushkarani or a Temple Tank is known as Vyasa Pushkarani and it is located just outside the premises. The Temple has also got a new Chariot or a Temple Car for the past 3 years. This Temple follows the Thengalai Tradition or Sampradhaya.
