Sri Vengeeswarar Temple is located in Vadapalani which is an important place in Chennai. The full name of the Temple is Sri Shanthanayagi Samedha Sri Vengeeswarar Temple. Some say that Vadapalani in ancient times was known as Vyakarapuri. The Temple has a 7 tiered East facing Rajagopuram and is located in Sannadhi Street of Vadapalani. Infact this Temple has four Rajagopurams on all four directions. The East facing Rajagopuram is made up of seven tiers, the West facing Rajagopuram has three tiers while the North facing and South facing Rajagopurams look smaller and are made up of two tiers. On entering the Rajagopuram there are Idols of Sri Surya Bhagwan, Sri Veerabadrar, Sri Chandra Bhagwan and Sri Muneeswarar on either side of it and these four Idols are West facing and looking towards the Moolasthanam. There is a tall gold plated Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a small gold plated Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Bhagwan beneath a four pillared Mandapam looking towards the Moolasthanam. The Gopuram contains coloured Idols of Sri Shivan, Sri Parvathy, Sri Somaskandar, Sri Vinayagar and Sri Murugan.

The Gopuram leading to the Moolasthanam has a black Idol of Sri Shivan and Sri Parvathy who are flanked by two Nandhi Vaahanam. The Moolasthana Mandapam has Idols of Sri Pathanjali Munivar and Sri Vyakarabathar who are West facing and looking towards the Moolasthanam. To the left is the Naalvar Sannadhi which is North facing. The threshold of the Moolasthanam is gold plated and looks eyecaptivating. On either side of the Moolasthanam there are two gold plated Idols of two Dwara Baalakas who seem to stand guard. Close to the left Dwara Baalaga Idol is an East facing gold plating Idol of Sri Vinayagar who looks diminutive. Then there is a secong gold plated threshold leading to the Moolasthanam on which a Vinayagar's Image is etched. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Omnipotent and Presiding Deity of Sri Vengeeswarar is seen as a Shiva Lingam who looks dazzling under the naturally lit oil lamps. He seems accentuated to see with the Naagabharanam. It is believed that Saint Vyakarabathar had installed the Shiva Lingam of Sri Vengeeswarar and Prayed to Him to seek His Blessings. Therefore some call Sri Vengeeswarar as Sri Vyakarapureeswarar or Sri Puliyurudaiyar.  Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the following Idols of Sri Ganapathy, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeshwarar. The rear of the Moolasthanam looks amazingly designed in the Gajabrustam style. It is a real wonder that this resembles the rear of the Elephant and the Devotees fascinate as to how this engineering marvel was so well designed several centuries ago.

The Consort here is known as Sri Shanthanayagi Ambal and Her Shrine is between the Rajagopuram and the Moolasthanam. The Santhanayaki Ambal's Shrine is South facing and atop Her Shrine's Gopuram are the Idols of Sri Santhanayaki Ambal and Ashtalakshmis. At the entrance point there are coloured Idols of Sri Kamadhenu and a Viruksham on either side of the entry point. The Ambal's Shrine of this Temple is much bigger than the Ambal of other Shivan Temples. On either side of Her Moolasthana entrance there are two black Dwara Baalaki Idols who are South facing and who seem to stand guard before Her Shrine. In the South facing Shrine of Sri Shanthanayagi Ambal, She is seen in a standing posture Blessing Her Devotees. The Ambal's Idol looks eye captivating when seen in the backdrop of Her Silver Threshold. Facing the Shrine of the Ambal is a Simha Vaahanam along with a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. Close to the left Dwara Baalaki Idol is an East facing Idol of Sri Bhuvaneswari Ambal. The Moolasthana Mandapam of Sri Shanthanayagi Ambal is seen with two huge coloured Idols which face each other on the Eastern and Western Wall of Her Shrine.

Some Devotees choose to visit the East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Varasiddhi Vinayagar which is close to the Moolasthanam of Sri Vengeeswarar. Facing Him is a Moonjur Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. Then is an East facing Alankaara Mandapam or Abhishekha Mandapam. On circumambulating the outer peripheral there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Subramaniyar who is flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena. Facing this Sub Shrine is a Mayil or Peacock Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. There is a lone coloured Idol of Sri Arumugam on the Gopuram and to the rear of this Sub Shrine is a West facing Idol of Sri Bala Subramaniyar. Next is the East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kasi Viswanathar and Sri Visalakshi Ambal. The Sub Shrine of Sri Mahalakshmi in the outer peripheral is also East facing and She is seen in a sitting posture. Then there is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar in which He is seen along with Sri Sivagami Ambal and Sri Manikavasagar. This Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar is awe inspiring when seen along with the Rudraksha Pandhal which is seen before His Sub Shrine.

The Sub Shrine of Sri Kaala Bhairavar is South facing in the outer peripheral and to the rear of the Ambal Sannadhi. Then is a huge Arasa Maram or Peepal Tree with a podium built around it. There are East facing Idols of a Shiva Lingam, a Nandhi Vaahanam, Sri Vinayagar and a Naga Devatha Idol. Close to this is a Divine Well and next to this is a West facing Yaaga Saalai. The Temple has a well built West facing Navagraha Sannadhi. Close to the Navagraha Sannadhi is a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Saneeswara Bhagwan. The Temple has a Madapalli or Temple Kitchen, a Ghoshala and a exclusive Lamp Stand where Devotees can light oil lamps. Standing next to the Rajagopuram outside the Temple is the huge shuttered shelter in which the Temple Chariot of Sri Vengeeswarar Temple is safely enclosed. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Chitthrai Brahmmothsavam, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. There are several Flower shops outside the Temple selling Flowers, Garlands and other Pooja Articles.
