Thiruvaikavur ot Thiruvaigavur is a village located in Thanjavur Dist and 21 Kms away from Kumbakonam. This Temple is considered as the 102nd Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 48th Sthalam on the Northern Side of River Kaveri. Initially this place was called as Bhumipuram, Vilvavanam etc. The earlier Chola Kings  had built this Temple. Some call this Temple as Sri Vilvavaneswarar Temple while the others call it as Sri Vilwaneswarar Temple or Vilvanathar Temple.The Temple does not have any big Rajagopuram. This Temple is East facing and there is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam in a 4 pillared Mandapam. The strange fact here is the Nandhi Vahanam is not facing the Moolasthanam but East facing in order to chase away the Death God Yema Dharmarajan. 

At the threshold of the Moolasthanam there are No Dwara Balakaa Idols but it is believed that Maha Vishnu and Brahmma guard this temple instead of the usual Dwara Baalakas.In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vilvavaneswarar is east facing and in the form of a Swayambhu Sivalingam and He is considered as an incarnation of Shiva. The Moolavar Koshtam has the Idols of  Ganapathy, Pichadanar, Sage Agasthiya, Lingothbavar, Arthanareeswarar, Kala Bhairavar, and Ashtabhuja Durgai. The Ambal is known as Sri Sarvajana Rakshaki or Sri Valakkai Nayagi and She is East facing and in a standing posture in the Ambal's Shrine. Instead of the usual Dwara Baalakis are two Vinayagar Idols on either side of the Shrine of Ambal. 

Sri Vallabha Vinayagar, Murugan as Arumugar with His Consorts Valli and Devasena Sri Murugan as Arumugar is with six faces, sitting on a peacock. The whole image of Arumugar was carved out of a single stone. The Peacock is facing the left direction. Saptamatrikas, Kasi Viswanathar, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Two Vishnu Durgai, Two Bhairavas, Saneeswaran, and Navagrahas. There are two Chandikeswarar Idols in front of Vishnu Durgai. In the Maha Mandapam the Saptha Kannigaigal, Maha Vishnu Brahmma and the Urchavamoorthy Idols of Bhaktha Anjaneyar,Vishnu, Narayani Bhairavar, Suryan and Chandran are installed side by side. There is also a Siddhu Vinayagar Sub Shrine at the entrance of the Temple. 

It is said that the early Chola Rulers had beuilt this temple but later the Vijayanagara Rulers and the Pallava Rulers reconstructed and modified the Temple to a great extent. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Purattasi Navarathri, Aippasi Annabhishekam, Thirukarthikai, Thiruvadhirai, Maha Shivarathari are celebrated in a grand manner.
