Sri Bhangaru Kamakshi Amman Temple is located in West Main Street / Mela Theru in Thanjavur Town. This is an East facing Temple and there is a Mandapam with a few pillars. To the left of this Mandapam is a huge East facing Varadha Maha Ganapathy Sannadhi who has to be prayed first before entering the Temple. The Temple has an East facing three tiered Rajagopuram. On entering the Temple there are a few cylindrical pillars leading to the Sanctum Sanctorum and on top of each of them they have placed an Ashta Lakshmi Idol with a glass covering. Just before the Moolasthanam are two Dwara Baalagi Idols which are East facing. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Bangaru Kamakshi Amman is seen in an East facing standing posture. The Presiding Deity Idol is made of Gold and they smear Punugu on the face of the Deity which makes it look black in colour. The word Bangaru itself denotes Gold. Close to this is a South facing Urchavamoorthy Idol of Kamakoti Amman who is seen in a standing posture. A Simha Vaahanam stands guard facing the Urchavamoorthy Idol of Kamakoti Amman. It is said that the Presiding Deity of Bangaru Kamakshi Amman and the Urchavamoorthy Idol of Kamakoti Amman were brought here from Kancheepuram several centuries ago. A few courageous Devotees shifted the Presiding Deity and the Urchavamoorthy Idol from Kancheepuram to Udayarpalayam and them finally brought it to Thanjavur and buit a Temple during repeated Mughal Invasions. While being brought from Kancheepuram to Thanjavur the face of the golden Idol of Sri Bangaru Kamtchi Amman was smeared with Punugu to make if appear black in order to hoodwink the then invaders. This habit of smearing Punugu oiver the Amman's face still continuous. The outer peripheral has a multi pillared Mandapam in which Music and other Divine Rituals are conducted regularly. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is said to be a Vilva Maram under which several Naga Devathas are kept. The outer peripheral of the Temple has a temporary tin sheet roofing and there is a single tiered Rajagopuram at the rear end of the Temple. It is customary to see a Simha Vaahanam at every doorstep of this Temple. A well maintained Ghoshala could be found. Since this Temple is located in a busy area Devotees may find it cumbersome to park their vehicles. Maasi Annual festival, Navarathri, Aadi & Aippasi Pooram, Shankara Jayanthi and Vasantha Urchavam are some of the functions celebrated with great fanfare. On all Fridays the Urchavamoorthy Idol is taken around the Temple premises in a golden Chariot. The Temple is administered by Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Kancheepuram.
