Punnainallur is a small village located on the outskirts of Thanjavur. This is an East facing Temple. Initially there is a Gopuram and there are two East facing Dwara Baalagi Idols. Beneath the Gopuram is a Chakkaram and a South facing Idol of Ganapathy and Narasimhar. There are multiple pillars on either side leading towards the Rajagopuram. To the right is a Kalyana Mandapam pertaining to this Temple. At this point there is a 7 tiered gorgeous East facing Rajagopuram. Close to this Rajagopuram is a small but deep Sacred Tank. Devotees may have to climb down the stairs to reach this Sacred Tank where Salt is generally poured into the Tank as a Divine Offering. Beyond the seven tiered Rajagopuram is another five tiered East facing Rajagopuram. To the left of this Rajagopuram are two Ganapathy Idols along with few others. To the right of this is an Idol of Lord Subramayar who is flanked with Valli and Devasena. Beneath the five tiered Rajagopuram are two lovely hand drawn Images of two Dwara Baalagis. Facing the Moolasthanam is a Dwajasthambam, Neivedhya Peedam and Lingothbhavar. The Presiding Deity here in this Temple is Goddess Mariamman who is otherwise known as Muthu Mariamman because of the Sweat Pearls she develops on her face during the course of the day. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Punnainallur Mariamman who is ubiquitous and resplendent is seen East facing. Close to the Moolasthanam is an Nortth facing Sub Shrine of Goddes Vishnu Durgai. The Temple has a  West facing Sub Shrine of Pechiamman in the outer peripheral. It was initially an anthill which was later developed and constructed as a full time Temple in the 18th Century by the Marata King Chatrapathi Venkoji Maharaja. There is a huge Vasantha Mandapam with depiction of various forms of Goddess Sakthi viz 1) Gaja Lakshmi, 2) Veera Lakshmi, 3) Sowbhagya Lakshmi, 4) Santhana Lakshmi, 5) Dhana Lakshmi, 6) Dhairya Lakshmi, 7) Vidya Lakshmi and 8) Kaarunya Lakshmi and together these eight Goddess are called as Ashta Sakthi. The Temple is different from other Temples because there is no Daily Abhishekam done to Goddess Mariamman. Instead She is anointed for a continuous period of 48 days and this happens once in 5 years. It is believed that during these intermittent years the Power of Goddess Mariamman increases manifold. Carrying Paal Kudam or fully Milk Filled Pots on their Heads and Shoulders is another form of thanksgiving to Punnainallur Mariamman. Paal Kudam function is celebrated in a grand manner with several hundreds of Devotees following this ritual in tandom meticulously. Generally Devotees who pray to Her with some request offer long skirts otherwise known as Paavadai along with a Blouse to Goddess Mariamman. It is pertintent to mention here that Swamy Sadasiva Brahmendrar had visited this Temple during his lifetime. The Float festival or the Theepam festival is celebrated in the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani in the Tamil Month of Purattasi. The Temple provides Thulabaara facilities for the sake of the Devotees. This Temple has Wheelchair facilities for the sake of sick and elderly. Water dispensers are placed at regular intervels. To the rear of the Temple there is a Nandhavanam or a Temple Garden. The Temple authorites have placed a lighting stand where oil lamps could be lit by the Devotees. There are two Prasada counters located within the Temple. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Neem Tree and the Pushkarani is Amirtha Pushkarani, Nithya Pushkarani and Vellakulam. One of the Pushkarani is located outside the Temple premises close to the car park. This Pushkarani is quite big and it is the ususal custom here for the Devotees to have a tonsuring and then bathing in this Pushkarani before they enter the Temple. Those suffering from small pox, chicken pox and such other serious skin or other physical ailments come to this Temple and pray before Goddess Mari Amman and surprisingly within the next few days such Devotees who come with a Prayer get themselves cured from their ailments in a miraculous way.  As a measure of thanksgiving they buy and donate such mud organs or silver plated organs to Her. These organs could be purchased from the local shops outside the Temple premises.
