St. Andrew's Church or The Kirk, Egmore, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

St. Andrew's Church is also known as The Kirk.  This Church was built to serve the Scottish community in Chennai. The construction of this Church began in the year 1818 and the Church was consecrated in the year 1821. This is one of the oldest Church in Chennai. The Church model is designed based on St. Martin in the Fields and St. George’s Church in Dublin. This Church is considered as the Daughter Church to the famous Trafalgar Square. This Church is built by following the Neoclassical Style of Architecture. This Church complex was designed by Major Thomas De Havilland and Colonel James Caldwell.  It is crowned using a Masonry Dome which is painted blue. The Golden Star Stand is supported by 16 fluted pillars.   One of the architectural marvel of this Church is that  the dome has a frame work of brick supported by an Arch filled with Pottery Cones. The interior is blue and it is made out of Sea Shells and Lapis Lazuli.  The Windows of this Church is decorated using stained glasses. This Church  follows the Scottish Presbyterian way of Worship and Tradition.  The  Pipe organ installed in this Church was built in New Yorkshire and was installed in this Church in the year 1883.
