The Thousand Lights Mosque is a multi-domed Mosque, situated in Anna Salai in Chennai. This is one of the biggest Mosque in India. Nawab Umdat-ul-Umrah had a very big hand in building this Mosque. This Mosque was built in the year 1810. This Mosque is known as Thousand lights Mosque since there are 1000 Lamps inside this mosque. It is believed that the 1000 lamps of this Mosque should be lit in order to illuminate the assembly hall. This Mosque Complex is built by following the medieval architectural style. The twin spearing minarets of this mosque is 64 feet tall. In 1981 a new modern day Mosque Complex was built. There are five inward curving domes which portrays the modern West Asian influence. There are two separate prayer hall for men and women as per the Islamic Tradition. It is believed that the Shias who live in the Thousand Lights neighbourhood and Royapettah are the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt. Thousand Lights Mosque is a common Mosque for all Muslims and this is considered to be a primary holy place for Muslims following Shias Tradition. This Mosque draws attention of many people from far and near during Moharam festival. The Mosque is also a home of Chief Shia Ghazi Moulana Ghulam Mahadi Khan of Tamil Nadu. There is a burial ground inside this Mosque for Shias Muslim.
