St.George's Cathedral Church, Gopalapuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

St. George’s Cathedral in Chennai belongs to (CSI) Church of South India. This Church was built in  the year 1815. This Church is one of the prominent Church in history of Christianity in India. This Church broke the barriers between Protestants of various Traditions. This Church has a Tall Spire and Pillars. There are many Marble Idols inside this Church structure. There are different Memorials inside this Church complex. This Church was constructed with the aid of lottery fund.  It is believed that is initially costed 41709 Pagodas after the later addition of furniture, organ and addition of other structures increased the initial cost went up to 57255 Pagodas. This Church was designed by Colonel J.L. Caldwell with the help of his Assistant Captain De Havilland. The initial service was conducted by Presidency Chaplain in the year 1816.  The First Anglican Bishop of Calcutta, Thomas Fanshaw Middleton consecrated this Church.  Inside the Church complex there is a cemetery.  De Havilland’s wife’s funeral was held here.  The Brass Altar Cross was donated by Surgeon General Cornish. F.E. Kneale Episcopal Chai to this Church.  The Gold Chaile and Panten for Holy Communion was donated by Lt. Colonel Herbert St. Clare Carruthers in 1908.  The windows of this Church has been decorated using stained glass windows. There is an Idol of Bishop Daniel Corrie who was the first Bishop of Madras.  There are nearly eight bells which had been made in London and fixed here in 1871.
