  • Arulmigu Thirumalai Ujjivanadhaswamy Temple, Uyyakondan, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu

This Temple is located on the Vayalur Road In Trichy.  This Temple is called as Uyyakondan Thirumalai Ujjeevanathaswamy Temple and it is located on a small hillock where Devotees have to climb around 30 feet to reach the hilltop Temple.  Down below the hillock at the foot hill there are Sub Shrines for Lord Ganesha and Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniar.  The entire Temple is built on the banks of River Uyyakondan and is believed to have been built around 950 AD and inscriptions connecting King Raja Raja Chola to this Temple are seen.  It is also said that the God fearing Chola Queen Sembian Maa Devi was known to show very keen interest in this Temple. The Presiding Deity here is Lord Ujjivanadhaswamy and His Consort is known as Anjanakshi and Balambigai.  The Temple is East facing and it has a Dwajasthambam, Nandhi and a Bali peedam facing the Main Deity as usual.  However differing from other Shiva Temples the entrance to the Sanctum Sanctorum is not directly opposite to the Dwajasthambam.  Unusually the entrance is located slightly away from the line of the Dwajasthambam.  There is a separate Sub Shrine for His Consort Goddess Anjanakshi who is seen in a standing posture.  There is another Sub Shrine for Goddess Balambigai.  Lord Ujjivanatha Swamy, Goddess Anjanakshi and Goddess Balambigai, all three of them have three different Nandhi before their Shrines.  There are Sub Shrines for Suryan, Bhairavar, Chandikeshwaar, Saneeswarar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Arthanareeswarar, Brahmma and Durgai.  Nandhivarma Pallavan had contributed a lot to this Temple. Hence this place is also known as Nandhivarma Mangalam.  This is classified as another Paadal Petra Sthalam.   All the Shrines of the Temple are enclosed in large concentric rectangular granite walls. This Presiding Deity is said to have been worshipped by Narathar, Markandeyar, Arunagirinathar, Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar. This Temple in Uyyakondan is located very close to Somarasampettai in Tiruchirappalli District.
