Malik Gafoor when he came conquering to Tamil Nadu saw the Red Colour in many places of Lalgudi and on seeing the Temple five tiered Rajagopuram called this place as Lal (Red) Gudi (Temple) which name is still being called by all of us. It is said that the the Seven Stars or Saptharishis had worshipped the Presiding Deity after which He was known as Sri Saptharishishwarar. The Seven Stars represent the Saven Rishis and they are as follows: Athiri, Brihu, Pulasthiyar, Vashista, Gauthama, Angreesa and Marichi.
