Kumaravayalur is located in Tiruchirappalli District but the locals simply call it as Vayalur Murugan Temple. The Temple is located close to the River Uyyakondan a tributary of River Cauvery. Though the Main Deity and the most popular one is Sri Vayaloor Murugan, the Presiding Deity of this Temple is God Shiva. There is a Welcome Arch on the Main Road leading to this Temple and the distance between the Main Road and the actual Temple would be aroung 1 Km. There are dual entrances leading to the Temple. The first entrance is South facing whereas the Main entrance is East facing and is used by all Devotees visiting this Temple. The Temple has a three tiered East facing Rajagopuram through which the Devotees enter this Temple. There is a four pillared Mandapam facing this Rajagopuram. A New five tiered Rajagopuram had been added here in recent days.

This Temple is and ancient one and is said to be more than 1200 years old. On entering the Temple there is a multi pillared Mandpam on the left side in which Functions are allowed to be conducted with the permission of the Temple Authorities. A huge Sthala Viruksham of Vanni Maram is seen here and the multi pillared Mandapam is built around it without disturbing the Sthala Viruksham. There is another multi pillared Mandapam which leads to the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Aadhinathar or Sri Adhinatha Swamy is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam and He looks dazzling to the eyes of the Devotees when seen with the Naagabharanam and the naturally lit Oil Lamps. Some mention Sri Athinathar as Sri Agneeswarar too. His Consort in this Temple is known as Sri Adhi Nayagi Ambal and She is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture. Though the Presiding Deity is Sri Adhinathar the Name and Fame of His beloved Son Sri Murugan or Sri Muthukumara Swamy has spread far and wide. Saint Arunagirinathar took this Temple to another level by singing in Praise of Him. Eminent spiritualists Sri Kripanandha Variar was very fond of this Murugan and had never failed to mention the Name of his favourite God Vayalur Sri Murugan in all his spiritual speeches.

The Shrine of Sri Vayalur Murugan or Sri Muthukumara Swamy is located to the rear of the Moolasthanam. In His Shrine the Main Deity os Sri Vayalur Murugan is seen East facing and flanked by His Consorts Sri Valli and Sri Devasena. He is seen with a single face but with four hands holding a Vel or Spear in one of them and in a standing posture with a Peacock seen to His rear. He looks resplendent and there is a steady inflow of His Devotees to His Shrine. Apart from these Main Shrines there are Sub Shrines for Sri Poyyamozhi Ganapathy. Vaikasi Visakam, Kanda Shasti, Panguni Uthiram, Thai Poosam etc draws huge crowd during which time special buses are run from Trichy to this Temple. Devotees tonsure their heads carry Milk Pots and Kaavadi as their Thanksgiving to Sri Murugan. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vanni Maram and the Pushkarani is known as Sakthi Theertham. It is believed that this Pushkarani was created by Sri Murugan using His Vel or Divine Spear. It is also believed that those inflicted with Naaga Dosham would get rid of it if they happen to take a holy dip in this Theertham.
