Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple, Anbil, Tiruchirapalli District, Tamil Nadu

  • Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple, Anbil, Tiruchirapalli District, Tamil Nadu

Anbil is a small village in Trichy District and this Temple is called as Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple or Vadivazhagiya Nambi Perumal Temple. The entrance of this Temple is East facing with a three tiered Rajagopuram. Sri Sundararaja Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu is found in a reclining posture with a five headed Divine Serpant Aaadhi Seshan standing guard near His head. Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi are found in the Sanctum Sanctorum itself along with the Presiding Deity. The Temple is considered to be the 4th Temple among the 108 Divya Desam. This is considered to be around 1000 to 2000 years old. The Presiding Deity is called Sri Sundara Raja Perumal (Thiru Vadivazhagiya Nambi) and His Consort is known as Azhagiya Valli Nachiar. The consecration of the Temple which was held up for around 100 years and was celebrated very recently. King Sundararaja Chola started the initial construction of this Temple and built it on the banks of River Kollidam successfully. He was an ardent Devotee of this Presiding Deity, but later the Vijayanagara Kings and Madurai Nayak Rulers had a big hand in shaping this Temple and promoting it. The story behind the Temple is as follows: Sage Mandoogan got cursed by the notorious and angry Sage Dhurvaasa and so Mandoogan worshipped at this Temple and was rid of his curse and got cured here. Once Sri Brahmma, the creator of the Universe thought to Himself that He is the sole reason for the world being so happy and beautiful, but Maha Vishnu advised Brahmma to keep His cool, and not to show His ego. Sri Brahmma was unable to change Himself and so Maha Vishnu cursed him to go to Earth and take a birth of a normal human being. Sri Brahmma who born as a human being in the earth went to many Temples and worshipped in order to get rid of his curse. At that time he saw a very handsome man who criss crossed him few times. Sri Brahmma thought that he had never seen such a handsome man till then. Later he realized that the handsome man was none other than Maha Vishnu, who came down to show Him that beauty is not stable and that ego will demolish one’s life. As Maha Vishnu showed mercy on Brahmma and showed his Full Form or Vishwaroopam at this place it is called as Anbil where Anbu denotes Love in Tamil. The Temple is revered in Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Thirumazhisai Alwar. The Sthala Viruksham is Thalamboo Tree and Theertham or Pushkarani is Mandooga Theertham.
