Thirupattur is a small village located a few kilometers away from Trichy Town. Tirupattur was known as Thirupedavur in ancient times. Though many claim this Temple to be more than 1000 years old, it is said that this Temple was built during the Vijayanagara Period in the 15th or 16th century. The full name of the Temple is Sri Brahmma Sampath Gowri Samedha Sri Brahmmapureeswarar Temple. This is an East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram. There are coloured stucco Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Brahmma, a Shiva Lingam, Shivan and Murugan at the entrance Gopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam.
In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Brahmmapureeswarar looks dazzling to the eyes of the Devotees. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Lingothbhavar, Sri Brahmma and Sri Durgai. The Consort known here as Sri Brahmma Sampath Gowri is also called as Sri Brahmmanayagi and is seen in Her Shrine. Sri Brahmma Devan is seen in His Sub Shrine in a Padmasana Posture seated on a Lotus. This Temple has a Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Pathanjali Munivar. There are Sub Shrines of Maha Vishnu, Sri Pazhamalainathar, Sri Kandapureeswarar, Sri Thaayumanavar, Sri Manduga Nathar, Sri Ekambareswarar, Sri Arunachaleswarar, Sri Kailasa Nathar, Sri Jambukeshwarar, Sri Kalathi Nathar, Sri Sapthagreeswarar and Sri Sudharaneswarar. The Temple also has a well sculpted Idol of Sri Narasimha Avathar. Most of these Shiva Lingams are installed in separate Shrines, which are situated around the Brahmma Theertham.
The story associated with this Temple is that Sri Brahmma became too haughty, thinking too much if Himself. In order to teach Sri Brahmma a good lesson Shiva plucked away the 5th Head of Sri Brahmma. Regretting and repenting for this it is said that Sri Brahmma had come here and Prayed to God Shiva and begged for pardon and resorted back His lost head. The Theertham or Pushkarani of the Temple is Brahmma Theertham. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
