Nanganallur is a Southern Suburb of Chennai between St.Thomas Mount and Meenambakkam. Nanganallur has gained more importance since there are lot of Hindu Temples in Nanganallur and its surrounding areas. This is a East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram and it is located in a busy Market area. There is a Dwajasthamabam, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a West facing Nandhi Vaahanam looking towards the Moolasthanam. Just above the Nandhi Mandapam is a Kailaya Kaatchi displayed with coloured Idols. The Moolasthana Gopura Mandapam has coloured Idols of Shiva and Parvathy seated on a Rishaba Vaahnam and flanking them are the Idols of Vinayagar and Murugan. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Arthanareeswarar who is an incarnation of Shiva is found East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Sri Arthanareeswarar is considered as a combination of Shiva and Parvathy and the Image is seen to the rear of Shiva Lingam in the Moolasthanam. At the threshold of the Moolasthanam are the Idols of Sri Bala Ganapathy and Sri Bala Subramaniyar. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. Beneath the Idol of Vinayagar is another Idol of Sri Vinaytheerkum Vinayagar. Some say that the Idol of the Presiding Deity was found and bought from the Pushkarani several decades ago. There are South facing Sub Shrines of Natarajar, Sivagami Ambal, Manickavasagar, Pathanjali Munivar and Vyakarabadhar. In the next South facing Sub Shrine Sri Arthanareeswari stands majestically. Then the South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Somaskandar is seen. The last South facing Sub Shrine of the Mha Mandapam has portraits of Adhi Shankarar, Kanchi Maha Periyava.
The outer periphery has a North facing Sub Shrine of Ammayappar Thiruthondar in which the 63 Naayanmaar Idols are displayed in a novel way. The Naalvar Idols and a Shiva Lingam too are found in this Sub Shrine. There is a Stage with a sitting area where Divine Functions could be held within the Temple.
The Shrine of Sri Ashtabuja Shanthi Durgai gains a lot of importance and this Shrine is located to the rear of the Temple facing East. There are two Dwara Baalakis at the entrance and two more Dwara Baalakis are found on either side of the threshold. The Idol of Sri Ashtabuja Shanthi Durgai is around 8 feet tall with 8 hands and She looks dazzling to the eyes of the Devotees. The Shrine of Sri Ashtabuja Shanthi Durgai is carved out in a splendid way as though the entire Shrine is mounted on a Chariot. All the pillars of this Shrine bears the Idols of Ashtalakshmi. A Madapalli or Temple Kitchen is found near this Shrine. There is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Aadhi Shankarar with others. Close to this is a place earmarked for lighting oil lamps. There is a Navagraha enclosure within the Temple premises. The Kaala Bhairavar is close to the Rajagopuram looking towards West. The Temple's Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is located close to the Temple. The Temple is well maintained and looks meticulously clean and the authorities have to be lauded for their splendid efforts. It would be even more better if the Archakas in and around the Moolasthanam concentrate more towards the Devotees with a Smile instead of frowning on them and playing with their Mobile Phones during lean hours.
