Nanganallur is a Southern Suburb of Chennai between St.Thomas Mount and Meenambakkam. Nanganallur has gained more importance since there are lot of Hindu Temples in Nanganallur and its surrounding areas. The Utthara Guruvayoorappan Temple is built by following the typical Kerala style of Architecture and is dedicated to Maha Vishnu. This Temple is considered to be a mini replica of the Guruvayurappan Temple, Guruvayur in Kerala. Though this Temple is constructed by following Kerala Style of Architecture concrete is used instead of wood. This Temple is named as Utthra Guruvayurappan Temple since it is located on the North of  the main Guruvayurappan Temple. This Temple was registered in the year 1969 and built in the early 1970's  and is currently administered and maintained by Guruvayurappan Asthika Samajam Trust. This Trust also runs an Ayurvedic Vaidyasalai. The Maha Kumbabhishekam of this Temple was performed on 17th April 1975. This Temple is located very close to Veera Anjeneyar Temple.

This is an East facing Temple but it doesn't have any Rajagopuram. Devotees may have to climb 5 or 6 steps to reach the Temple premises. The entire street opposite to the Temple has a temporary roofing. On entering there is a three layered Arch with a Kerala Style top. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maran and a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam facing the Moolasthanam. Beyond the next entrance are two rectangular Slab or Thinnai. Then is the Namaskaara Mandapam with a Vigraham or Idol of Sri Anjaneya Swamy facing the Moolasthanam. In one of the pillar found therein is a Panchaloga Anjaneya Swami Image embossed on it. The Moolasthanam is slightly elevated and could be accessed by the Purohits by climbing 4 to 5 steps. On either side of the Moolasthanam are two Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity os Sri Uthara Guruvayurappan is seen Blessing His Devotees. In the inner peripheral of the Temple there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vinayagar and facing Him is a Moonjur Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. In the outer peripheral there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Swamy Ayyappan. On circumambulating the outer peripheral yet another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal is seen. Just before the Perumal Sub Shrine is an area where Devotees are allowed to light oil lamps. The outer peripheral has a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Bagawathy Amman. The Ayurvedic Hospital and the Madapalli pertaining to this Temple is located closeby. The Temple also has a Navagraha Sannadhi in its outer peripheral and close to this is the Temple's Office. The cynosure of all eyes is the Temple's Ghoshala which is well maintained by any standards. It is the habit of this Temple to give Prasadam to each and every Devotee visiting here. It is customery for the Male Devotees to remove their Banyan and Shirt while entering the Temple.

Close to Sri Utthara Guruvayurappan Temple is a mini Marriage Hall which is known as Narayana Pravachana Mandapam where all types of functions could be held with the permission of the Temple authorities.
