Sri Dhandeeswarar Temple is located in Velachery in the outskirts of Chennai. Velachery is a fast developing locality and has a mixture of residential localities and IT Hubs as a result of which it is developing by leaps and bounds. The exact landmark to reach this Temple is that it is 2.5 Kms away from Guru Nanak College. The full name of the Temple is Sri Karunambika Samedha Sri Dandeeswaran Temple. It is believed that this Temple was built by the Pallava Kings but the Chola Rulers too supported this Temple to a great extent. It is believed that the God Of Death Yama was kicked on His Chest by God Shiva in Thirukadaiyur. He then lost all His strength and started wandering. Finally He came to this place and created a Pushkarani known as Yama Theertham and installed a Shiva Lingam in the name of Sri Dhandeeswarar and sought His Blessings so that He could restore His normal work in the usual manner. Pleased with His Sincerity and Devotion Shiva granted Him a Staff or Dhandam. The Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity of Sri Dandeeswarar is found in the Sanctum Sanctorum in the form of a Shiva Lingam. His Consort Sri Karunambikai who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture. The Temple is built in such a manner so that on the first day of the Tamil Month Thai the Sun Rays falls on the Shiva Lingam. The Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Ganapathy, Sri Subramaniya, Sri Sastha, Sri Suryan, Sri Bhairavar, Sri Veerabadrar and the 63 Naayanmaars. The Sub Shrine of Sri Veerabadrar is unique since here He is seen in a sitting posture unlike other Temples where He would be seen only in a standing posture. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Viva Tree and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is known as Yama Theertham. A dip in this Pushkarani is said to cure Devotees of all their ailments. Purattasi Navarathri, Aavani Moolam, Chithirai Vishu, Aadi Thapasu, Thaipoosam, Panguni Brahmmothsavam, Pradosham, Maha Shivarathiri, Thei Pirai Ashtami, Panchami are the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner.
