Sri Gangai Amman Temple is a well known traditional Temple located in Chavadi Street, Korattur, Chennai. Devotees could easily identify this Temple and reach it since it is located close to the well known ancient Sri Jambhukeshwarar Temple in Korattur. The Temple has a huge Name Board which can be easily viewed by the Devotees. Its a small new Temple facing East and it has been beautifully painted with gorgeous colours making it look eye appealing. This Temple has no Rajagopuram or Dwajasthambam and Devotees may have to climb 6 to 7 steps to reach the Temple premises. At the outset there is a huge Stone Trident at the base of which there are two Thirisoolam, a Naagar and a Simmam or Lion Idol embossed on it. Apart from the huge stone Trident there is a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam facing West and looking towards the Moolasthanam. There are again 5 to 6 steps to reach the Moolasthanam where the Presiding Deity of Goddess Gangai Amman is seen. On either side of the threshold of the Moolasthanam there are two huge coloured Dwara Baalaki Idols who stand guard to the Moolasthanam. Just at the entrance of the Moolasthanam there is a standing Idol of Vinayagar of the left and a Maha Vishnu Idol on the right. In the Sanctum Sanctorum there is a coloured Idol of Sri Gangai Amman which is almost fixed to the wall of the Moolasthanam and this Idol of Sri Gangai Amman is called a Sudhaisirpam and considered on par with the Presiding Deity. Just beneath this is the Presiding Deity of Sri Gangai Amman which is made of a black stone and is believed to be around 500 years old. This Presiding Deity is in a Sitting Posture and East facing. The Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Gangai Amman is also seen with the Sanctum Sanctorum and is regularly brought out during the Oonjal Sevai days. The Moolasthanam of the Temple can be circumambulated by the Devotees and to the rear of the Mooasthanam there is a Peepal Tree or an Arasa Maram beneath which is a West facing coloued Idol of Sri Gangai Amman.

Pournami or Full Moon Days are very important in this Temple and during the Full Moon Days the Swing Services or Oonjal Sevai would be performed and such days attract a lot of Devotees here. It is widely believed that those Devotees who see the Oonjal Sevai on 9 continuous Full Moon Days are Blessed and it is considered on par with visiting Kasi and have a Holy Dip in River Ganges. The Temple collects a small fee from the Devotees for the Oonjal Sevai. It is also said that Childless Couple are Blessed with a new Born Kid if they regularly pay a visit to this Temple. The Name and Fame of Sri Gangai Amman Temple is gradually spreading to all areas and in recent days there are many Devotees who come here on a regular basis.
