Kanyakumari is a place of National importance in India. Sri Guganatheeswarar Temple is located close to Kanyakumari Railway Station in a busy area. It is believed that this Temple is more than 1000 years old. It is said that King Raja Raja Chola was inspired and built this Temple. The Architecture is a mixture of the Chola and Travancore style. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Guganatheeswarar and His Consort is Sri Parvathy. This is an East facing Temple but is devoid of a Rajagopuram. There is a Gopuram atop which the coloured stucco Idols of Shivan, Parvathi, Vinayagar and Murugan are seen. The Neivedhya Peedam and the Nandhi Vaahanam are seen facing West and looking towards the Moolasthanam. There are two tall Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard before the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Swayambhu Shiva Lingam of the Presiding Deity of Sri Guhanatheeswarar is seen mounted on a circular Avudai and He is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the following Idols Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Lingothbhavar, Sri Durgai Amman and Chandikeshwarar. It is said that this Shiva LIngam is one of the tallest Shiva Lingams installed in Kanyakumari area or Naanjil Naadu. The Ambal who is known here as Sri Parvathi is found in Her South facing Shrine and She is seen in a standing posture displaying the Abhaya Varadha Hastham. The Sub Shrines of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Natarajar along with Karaikal Ammaiyar is seen in the Artha Mandapam. The other Sub Shrines of this Temple are those of Sri Kanni Moola Vinayagar, Sri Sastha, Sri Gajalakshmi, Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar and a Female Deity along with a Shiva Lingam. Apart from these there is a Sub Shrines for Sapthamathas and a Navagraha Sannadhi. Since the Temple is located in a Tourist place it attracts a lot of Tamil and Malayala Devotees. Adding to it Tourists who come from all over India visit this Temple too due to which there is a steady inflow of Devotees and Tourists alike. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
