Sri Thiruvaazhmaarban Temple is also known as Sri Kuralappa Perumal Temple. It is one among the 108 Divya Desam dedicated to Maha Vishnu. Thiruppathisaram is a small village located in Kanyakumari District. It is a very old Temple and nothing is known about the year during which the Temple was built. In ancient days this place was called as Thiruvanparisaram and it is believed that King Thirumalai Nayak had come to this Temple during his life time and had built the steps leading to the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank. The Sacred Tank is known as Soma Theertham. It is said that after a huge battle King Kulasekara Alwar who has lost his Horse during the battle luckily cited the missing horse near the Temple Tank. Hence Kulasekara Alwar thanked the God and took a Holy Dip here. It is also said that the Saptha Rishis came here to worship Maha Vishnu.
This is a East facing Temple and it does not have any Rajagopuram. Instead there is a small coloured Gopuram which is East facing and several coloured Idols are found on top of it. Opposite to this Gopuram there is a Neem Tree beneath which the Idols of Naga Devathaas are kept. On entering the Temple there is a huge Dwajasthambam or Kodimaram which is seen as though it is piercing the roof of the Temple. Close to this is a Neivedhya Peedam. There are two black Dwara Baalakas Idols at the entrance of the Moolasthanam. There is a Garudalwar Sannadhi over looking the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Presiding Deity of Thiruvaazhmarban is found in the Moolasthanam in a sitting posture. Devotees may wonder as to why there is no separate Shrine for the Goddess. Sri Lakshmi does not have a separate Shrine since it is construed that She dwells within the Chest of Thiruvazhmarban. This Temple is very unique since ther is no electrical illumination within the Moolasthanam. Instead the black and resplendent Thiruvaazhmaarban could be seen with the help of glowing Oil Lamps. There is a Urchavamoorthy Idol, made out of a Panchalogam and Abishekam or Ablution is done only to the Urchavar.
The Moolasthanam comprises of Vigrahams for the Vibeshanar, Anjaneyar, Ramar Seetha and Lakshmana, Kulasekar Alwar and Agasthiyar. Within the Sanctum Sanctorum there are Idols for Vishwaksenar, Nammalwar, Natarajar, Sivagami Ambal and others. Apart from these there are Sub Shrines for Garudalwar, Anjaneyar, Vedantha Desigar, Ramanujar and other Alwars. Devotees could circumambulate this Temple via the outer peripheral. This Temple follows Tenkalai Sampradhayam. Chithirai Brahmmotsavam, Navarathri, Vaikunda Ekadesi and Thiruvonam are celebrated in a grand manner and during the festive days this Temple attracts a lot of Devotees from far and near. The Temple's Chariot is seen safely enclosed near the entrance of the Temple on the Eastern side. This Temple is located in a narrow lane with a conglomeration of houses. Hence Devotees who happen to come to this Temple may find it cumbersome to park their vehicles.
