Kanyakumari is the Southern tip of India and was earlier called as Cape Comorin. The Temple is also called as Sarvani Shaktipeeth Shri Kanya Kumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple. This Temple is one of the 108 Sakthi Peedam dedicated to Goddess Sakthi. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Goddess Parvathy. She is in the form of an adolescent girl. Goddess Parvathy is also called as Sree Baala Bhadra, Sree Baala, Kanyakumari Devi and Devi Kumari. Devotees Worship Parvathy as Badhrakali Amman too. There is a saying that the Diamond Nose Stud of the Goddess had directed the sailors who had lost their way in the mid-seas. Such is the powerful glitter and sparkle of the jewelleries of this Goddess. Sri Bagawathi Amman Temple Kanyakumari which is said to have a history dating back to more than 3000 years old has a rock solid compound wall. The Temple has dual entrances with the main entry through the Northern gate. The Eastern entrance of the Temple is closed for most part of the year barring festive occasions. There is a belief that Banasura an Asuran got a boon from God that only a Virgin Girl could kill Him and hence his atrocities started growing and knew no bounds. To vanquish the Demon Baanasura, Goddess Parasakthi took the form of a Virgin Girl or Kumari. A pitched battle was fought between Devi Kanyakumari and Baanasura at the end of which Banasura bit the dust and was eventually slayed. Immediately Sri Narathar and Sri Parasuramar requested Her to live in the Earth till the end of Kaliyuga which the Goddess accepted with a glee. Therefore it is said that Sage Parasurama constructed the Temple and installed the Idol of the Presiding Deity Sri Kanyakumari Bagawathi Amman at a point where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean met. The other Sub Shrines of this Temple too are exquisitely built and these Sub Shrines are those of Sri Surya Devan, Sri Ganesan, Sri Swamy Ayyappan, Goddess Bala Sundari and Goddess Vijaya Sundari. It is believed that the mental ailments of Devotees visiting this Temple are cured. This Temple is considered as one among the 51 Shakthi Peedams. The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Pabanasa Theertham. The four Pillar Mandapam of the Temple gives out sounds of musical instruments like Veenai, Mirudhangam, Flute and Jaladharangam. Chithra Pournami, Durga Pooja, Navarathri are celebrated in a grand manner and Devotees from far flung areas visit this Temple during these days.
