Arulmigu Masimaneeswarar Temple is a few hundred metres away from the main road in Thirumullaivoyal. The full name of the Temple is Sri Kodi Idai Nayagi Samedha Sri Masimaneeswarar Temple. This Temple has a coloured five tiered South facing Rajagopuram. Before this Rajagopuram is a mammoth 16 pillared Mandapam which is used for the Divine functions pertaining to the Temple. There is a temporary tin sheet roofing beneath the Rajagopuram in which there are two South facing Dwara Baalakas. This Temple is one among the 276 Thevaraa Paadal Petra Sthalam and it has been sung high by Sundaramoorthy Nayanaar. On entering the Temple through the Rajagopuram there is a small South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Prasanna Vinayagar. Normally in other Temples the Presiding Deity of Shiva has to be seen first and then the Ambal but in this Temple Devotees may have to pray the Ambal first before visiting the Moolavar Sannadhi. There is a story behind this Temple which says that King Thondaimaan during his battle with the Asuraas came here when his Elephants leg was caught amidst the Mullai Kodi. The King attempting to cut the Mullai Kodi mistakenly struck against a Shiva Lingam and its started bleeding. Shivering with fear King Thondaimaan attempted to cut his neck and end his life but alas Lord Shiva thought differently and He appeared before King Thondaimaan and asked him to build a Temple at the same place. Hence the construction of the Temple in this place in Thirumullaivoyal has an Historic story behind it.
The Temple is unique since the Presiding Deity is East facing but Devotees have to enter the Moolasthanam only through the Northern entrance. In the outer peripheral too the Nandhi Vaahanam is found as like other Temples but the anomaly in this Temple is the Nandhi Vaahanam does not face the Moolasthanam nut instead it looks away from the Moolasthanam facing East. Close to this is a huge Neivedhya Peedam and a tall Dwajasthambam. The main gate at the East is closed permanently. Devotees ought to Pray the Ambal Goddess Kodi Idai Nayagi first. The Shrine of Kodi Idai Nayagi is East facing and Kodi Idai Nayaki Ambal is seen in a standing posture. Two Dwara Baalakis named as Dwara Sakthis stand guard before Her Shrine. There is a South facing Palliyaari close to the Ambal's Shrine. Next is the Shrine of Sri Masilamaneeswarar and there are two black Dwara Baalakas standing guard here. Sri Masilamaneeswarar is the Presiding Deity and He is seen East facing in the form of Shiva Lingam. The scar mark made inadvertantly by King Thondaimaan could be seen even today on the Shiva Lingam within the Sanctum Sanctorum. The anomaly of this Temple is that there is No Abhishekam done to the Presiding Deity on a daily basis. On all days the Shiva Lingam of Sri Masilamaneeswarar is seen smeared with Sandhana Kaapu. This Sandhana Kaapu is removed on the Sadhaya Nakshathram Day of Tamil Chithrai Month and Abhishekam is performed immediately thereafter. Within the next few minutes the Sandhana Kaapu smearing is done once again. This is the hallmark of this Temple which makes it quite different from those of other Shivan Temples. The Vimanam of this Temple stands testimony to the Gajabrushtam style of Architecture. On either side of the Moolasthanam there is an Idol of Ganapathy and Subramaniyar. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam the Idols of Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar are seen. The inner peripheral around the Moolasthanam has Idols of Veerabadrar, Naga Devathas, Vinayagar, Appar, Sundarar, Manikavasagar and Thirugnana Sammandhar (Naalvar), Vinayagar, Naga Devathas, Shiva Lingam, Mahalakshmi, Thillaivazh Andhanar, Thiruneelakandar, Meiporular, Kungliyar, Maanakanjarar, Kulachiraiyar, Appodhiyar, Dandiadigal, Somasi Maarar, Idankazhiyar, Valli Devesana Samedha Subramaniyar, Bala Murugan and Bhairavar. Close to the Dwara Baalakas there is a North facing Idol of King Thondaiman, an East facing Idol of Valli Devasena Samedha Subramniyar and South facing Sub Shrines of Rishaba Aroodar, Sivagami Ambal Samedha Natarajar, Manickavasagar, and Bikshadanar.
The outer peripheral of this Temple has an Urchavar Mandapam and a Temple Office. Next to it the Temple's Vaahanam are stacked in an enclosure. The Temple has a Yaaga Saalai in its outer peripheral. Close to this is a Gopuram on top of which Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar are seen. This enclosure has a Sub Shrine for Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar who are East facing and in a standing posture. Within the same enclosure. there is an East facing Sub Shrine for Cholapureeswarar and another West facing Sub Shrine for Kusalavapureeswarar. The Temple has a Madapalli and a huge Annadhana Koodam for the sake of the Devotees. The Sthala Viruksham of Sri Masilamaneeswarar Temple is Vilva Maram and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is Kalyana Theertham which is located outside the Temple premises. The Temple and its entire surroundings are kept meticulously clean and the authorities have to be appreciated for this. Festivals like Thirukarthigai, Arudhra Darisanam, Vaikasi Brahmmothsavam, Aani Vasantha Utsavam are celebrated in a grand manner.
There is a general belief among the Devotees that those Devotees ought to visit 1) Sri Thirumanangeeswarar Temple, Minjur, 2) Sri Vadivudai Amman Temple, Thiruvottiyur and 3) Sri Masilamaneeswarar Temple, Thirumullaivoyal on the same day. If this is done then it tantamounts to having visted Kasi and Rameswaram.
