Thiruporur is located close to Mahabalipuram and Thirukazhukundram in Chenglepattu District. This place is known as Thiruporur since it is believed that Sri Murugan won a battle against the Demon King Tharuka Asuran. The initial Temple complex was built by the Pallava Kings in the Tenth Century and was later rebuilt by Chidambara Adigal in the 17th Century. This Temple is built by following the South Indian Style of Architecture. This Temple has a colourful Welcome Arch leading to the Temple premises. There are several shops in and around the Temple premises and its Pushkarani making it appear too congested hence Devotees may find it tough to park their vehicles.
This Temple of Sri Murugan has an East facing Rajagopuram which stands majestic with its seven tiers. On entering the Temple there is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Mayil Vaahanam or Peacock Vaahanam looking towards the Moolasthanam. The right entrance has an Idol of Sri Subramaniya Swamy who is seen flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena. The Sanctum Sanctorum of this Temple looks special and the Idols of Sri Kandaswamy is seen flanked by Valli and Devasena. They are presumed to be Swayambhu. Many consider this as a Vigraham but in reality it is said that it was excavated from the Mother Earth centuries ago and that it is actually made of Palm Wood. The very sight of the Moolavar when seen along with His Consorts look dazzling to the eyes of His Devotees and it is believed that He never lets down His Devotees and their Wishes. Standing guard before the Divine Moolasthanam are the Idols of two Dwara Baalakas viz. Sudhakar and Sumukar. It is said that the Presiding Deity of Sri Kandaswamy is the only God who is known to have more than 300 names to His credit and one among them is Kukkudabjar which means having a Cock which is His Vaahanam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhandayudhapani, Sri Maha Vishnu and Sri Durgai. The inner peripheral of the Temple has a Sub Shrine comprising of the Idols of the Urchavamoorthies. Sri Devasena, His Consort has a South facing Sub Shrine for Her.
The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is Vanni Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Saravana Poigai or Velayutha Theertham which is located opposite to the Temple. This Temple is very fampous for conducting Hindu Marriages. Likewise Tonsuring and Ear Boring are done for many here. Apart from the regular day to day Poojas the following functions are conducted with great fanfare drawing enormous number of Devotees from far and near and the functions are as follows: Panguni Uthiram, Karthigai Deepam, Kanda Shasti, Thai Poosam, Vaikasi Visakam, Aadi Kiruthigai, Masi Brahmmothsavam and Thepposthavam. Though it is not in the list of the Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple it draws equal importance since Sri Kandaswamy is very close to the Mind and Hearts of all the Devotees.
