Cheyyur is one of the Coastal place of Chenglepet District and it was formerly known in ancient days as Valavapuri. Sri Kandhaswami Temple in Cheyyur is also called as Vedhalam Ganam Pugazh Velavar Sri Kandha Swamy Temple. This Temple has a South facing entrance and Devotees may have to climb down 4 to 5 steps to reach the Temple premises. At the outset there are two multi pillared Mandapams on either side. The Temple does not have a Rajagopuram. Though the entrance of the Temple is South facing the Moolasthanam is East facing. Looking towards the Moolasthanam are two Neivedhya Peedams, a Dwajasthambam and a Mayil Vaahanam which is placed in a four pillared Mandapam facing West.

In the East facing Moolasthana Mandapam there are two Dwara Baalagas standing guard on either side. Beside one Dwara Baalaka is an East facing Vinayagar and beside the other Dwara Baalaka is an East facing Idol of Murugan. Towards the Moolasthanam is another Neivedhya Peedam and a Mayil Vaahanam. There are two more Dwara Baalakas in this place and they are known as Sujanan and Suveeran. Beside one of these Dwara Baalakas is an East facing Idol of Vinayagar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Kandaswamy is seen East facing and in a standing posture along with His Consorts Valli and Devasena. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam are the Idols of Sri Nirutha Skandar, Sri Vinayagar, Sri Brahmma Sastha, Sri Balaskandar, Sri Sivagurunathar, Sri Pulindhar and Chandikeshwarar. The Urchavamoorthy Idols of Sri Shanmughar and others are kept in a South facing Sannadhi. The Idols of Sri Bhairavar and Gugha Suryan look towards the Moolasthanam and are West facing.

It is believed that Sri Kanthaswamy who is also known as Murugan killed Sooran and his son Iraniyeswaran and to get rid of the Brahmmahathi Dosham. He installed a Shivalingam here known as Sri Somanathar who is East facing and worshipped Him. The Idol of Goddess Parvathy is situated within the Sub Shrine of Sri Somanathar and She is seen in a standing posture facing South. On either side of the Sub Shrine of Somanathar are the Idols of Sri Brahmma and Sri Maha Vishnu. Facing the Sub Shrine of Sri Somanathar is a Nandhi Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. In the outer peripheral there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Pradhana Ganapathy. The Gopuram of this Sub Shrine has an Idol of Sri Pradhana Ganapathy and this Sub Shrine can be circumambulated by the Devotees.

This Temple is believed to have been built by the Chola Kings during the 10th century. It is one of the rarest of the three Sri Kandaswamy Temples in Tamil Nadu. The Temple is also very unique since there is no Sub Shrine for Sri Dhakshinamoorthy. The pillars of the Temple are so well decorated and the sculptures of Yoga Narasimhar, Mariyamman and Lakshmi Narasimhar are displayed on it. Kanda Sasthi, Thai Poosam, Aadi Pooram are celebrated in a grand manner in this Temple and during that time there is a overwhelming number of Devotees. Saint Arunagirinathar is said to have visited this Temple and has sung in Praise of the God. Hence this Temple is considered as a Thirupugazh Sthalam. Outside the Temple's South facing entrance is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Swamy Ayyappan which belongs to this Temple.
