Vayalur is a small village located near Kalpakkam in Chengalpattu District. Sri Tirupuliswarar and Sri Vaikundanatha Perumal Temple is actually a twin Temple located in Vayalur. While Sri Thirupuleeswarar represents Saivism, Sri Vaikuntanatha Swamy represents the Vaishanivism and therefore this Temple stands for the Unity of Saivism and Vaishnavism. Hence it is rightly called as Shiva Vishnu Temple by several Devotees. This Temple is an East facing Temple. There is a basal structure for the Rajagopuram but it was never built finally. There is a Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam on a podium facing West and looking towards the Moolasthanam of Sri Thirupuleeswarar. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Thirupuleeswarar is in the form of a Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of Shiva. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma and Durgai. The Ambal is known as Sri Angayarkanni Ambal who is seen in a stadning posture in Her South facing Shrine.
In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vaikuntanatha Swamy is seen flanked by His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. There is a West facing Garudalwar Sannadhi looking the Moolasthanam of Sri Vaikuntanatha Perumal. The Perumal Moolasthanam does not have any Idols around its Koshtam. This Moolasthanam is beautifully designed with a Gajabrushtam style. Hence Devotees viewing the Moolasthanam from its rear would see it resembling the rear of an Elephant. It is said that this Temple was built during the Pallava Dynasty and later the Chola Rulers too had developed it to this level. It is said that Kulothunga Cholan I evinced keen interest on this Temple and redesigned it. Currently this Temple is under the control of Archealogical Survey of India and they have to be complimented for maintaining this Temple neatly.
