Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is built on the Shores of Bay of Bengal. This Temple is considered as Vaipusthalam since Saint Appar praised this Temple. Initally this place was called as Jayanthipuram or Jayanthinagaram since Jayanthi means Victory and Puram or Nagaram means Town. It is believed that Sri Murugan won the battle against Soorapadman here and hence the name Jayanthinagaram. Soora Samhaaram is a re enactment of the Victory over Demon Soorapadman and Kanda Shasti a Devotional song sung in praise of Sri Murugan are two important features of this Temple. There is a huge nine tiered Rajagopuram which is of height 157 feet and to indicate this there are nine copper Kalasams kept atop the Gopuram. The Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple is Cavelike and the Presiding Deity or Moolavar Sri Subramaniya Swamy is seen as Childlike. The Presiding Deity of Sri Subramaniya Swamy's Omnipotent Power was seen from the fact that even the Tsunami which broke loose could not cause any damage to this Temple.
There is a Holy Well called as Naazhi Kinaru inside this Temple and Devotees visiting this Temple can take a Holy bath after having an initial Sacred Bath in the Bay of Bengal. This Temple was forcefully occupied by the Dutch for two years from 1646 to 1648. They failed to vacate the Temple even after several rounds of negotiation. Later Thirumalai Nayakar requested them to leave the Temple bag and baggage. It is still said that while vacating the Temple premises the Dutch East India company took away a lot of valuable and treasures from this Temple. Every year lakhs of Devotees visit this Temple during Vaikasi Visagam, Avani Festival, Skanda Shasti Festival and Masi Festival.
