This is one of the most ancient Perumal Temples dedicated to Maha Vishnu in Alwarthirunagari in Thoothukudi District. Maha Vishnu who is worshiped as Sri Aathinathar or Sri Aadhinatha Perumal and His Consort Lakshmi as Sri Athinathanayagi and Sri Thirukurukur Nayagi or Nachiyar. This Temple, one of the Nava Tirupathi (Nine Tirupathi Temples), is glorified in the Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar Saints from the 6th to 9th centuries AD. Incidentally Alwarthirunagari happens to be the birth place of the Vaishnav Saint Nammalwar who has composed 1000s of verses.
This is an East facing Temple with a three tiered Rajagopuram. There is a four pillared Mandabam and a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam facing the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Aathi Natha Perumal is seen East facing and Blessing His Devotees. The inner peripheral of the Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Hanuman, Sri Venugopalan, Sri Gnanapiran, Sri Narasimhar and Sri Thiruvenkadamudaiyan. A Temple Kitchen or Madapalli is also seen in the inner peripheral. The Temple's outer peripheral has Sub Shrines of Sri Chakrathalwar, Sri Paramapadhanathar, Dasavatharams and others. Likewise the Thaayar Sannadhi of Sri Thirukurukur Nayagi is also located here. A Nammalwar Sub Shrine too is seen here with a Dwajasthambam and a Neivedhiya Peedam.
Among the Temple festivals, the most prominent one here is The Garuda Sevai Utsavam (festival) in the month of Vaikasi (May & Jun). In this festival Urchavar Idols from the Nava Tirupathi Shrines are brought on Garuda Vahanam to this place. The Idol of Nammalwar on an Anna Vahanam (Palanquin) is brought out and taken to each of the Nine Temples through the paddy field. His Paasurams (verses) dedicated to each of these Nine Temples are recited at respective Temples by the Pandits. This festival is held with great fanfare and Devotion attended by a large number of Devotees. The Temple is classified as a Dhivya Desam one of the 108 Vishnu Temples that are mentioned. This Temple is well maintained and is thronged from Devotees from everywhere. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is known as Uranga Puli or Tamarind Tree. Its called so since the leaves of this Tree does not fold and sleep during the Nights.
