Swarnamalai is a small hillock located on the outskirts of Kovilpatti in Tuticorin District. This is an East facing Temple which is built on top of a hillock in Swarnamalai. The Temple could be reached by footsteps or through a recently laid motorable ghat road. This is an East facing Temple and the strange fact of this Temple is that Sri Kathirvel Murugan is unseen or formless since a Vel or Spear which has been firmly planted in the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum is construed as the Presiding Deity. This Spear or Vel is considered as the Presiding Deity and Prayed by all Devotees. It is said that this Vel or Spear was fetched from Sri Lanka several decades ago and then installed in the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum here. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Manicka Vinayagar, Sri Dhandayudhapani and Sri Kaala Bhairavar.

There is a Cave at the foothill of the Temple and this Cave is known as Tiger Cave. Some Idols and pictures have been kept here by few Devotees and these are also Prayed here by the Devotees. Some say that centuries before it was the practice of Sages and Siddhars then to perform Penance here. This hillock of Swarnamalai where the Temple is located is visible to the travellers who pass through Kovilpatti byepass. Though this Temple is located in a picturesque ambience, reaching this Temple through the serpantine and narrow lanes of Kovilpatti could be an arduous task for those travelling by vehicles. Aadi Pooram, Thai Poosam, Kiruthigai, Vinayagar Chathurthi are celebrated in a grand manner.
