Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal temple is located in a small village called Tirukkolur in Tuticorin District. This Temple is said to be one of the oldest Temples in Tamil Nadu dating back to around 1900 years old. This Temple is located close to Alwarthirunagari. It is quite famous since it is one of the Nava Tirupathi Temples dedicated to Maha Vishnu. This Temple has an East facing three tiered Rajagopuram. The History behind the Temple is that once Sri Kuberan threw a lustful glance with a smile at Goddess Parvathy which was not relished by Shivan. Hence Kuberan lost all His Wealth came to Thirukolur to seek forgiveness from Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. Kuberan did Penance and was finally forgiven by Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal and got back His lost Wealth.
In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu is seen in a reclining posture with a Marakka kept beneath His Head as a pillow. The Lotus Stalk coming out from His umbilicam on which Brahmma is seen and the Divine Feet of Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal is as important as seeing the face of the Presiding Deity. It is believed that the Presiding Deity of Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal is protecting the Navanidhi under His Right Shoulder. It is visible to the Devotees that Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal is looking towards His left palm to watch and have a measure of His Wealth. The Vimanam of this Temple is known as Srikara Vimanam. The Consorts of Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal are Sri Kolurvalli Thaayar and Sri Kumudhavalli Thaayar. It is said that the original Deity was refurbished and installed by Rani Mangammal who was an ardent Devotee of this Temple. One important factor is that all the Sub Shrines of this Temple is designed rectangularly.
The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani of this Temple is known as Kubera Theertham. A Holy Dip in Kubera Theertham and Prayers before Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal is believed to bring back all the lost Wealth of a Devotee. Vaikunda Ekadesi during December and January month is celebrated in a grand manner in this Temple. Saint Namalzhawar has praised this Temple in his Mangalasasanam. This Temple is related to Mars Planet and hence is considered as a Sevvai Dosha Parihaara Sthalam.
