Arulmigu Vandiyur Mariamman Temple is located in Theppakulam area of Madurai City. It is very close to River Vaigai and Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple. It was the Pandya King Koon Pandiyan who recovered the Idol of Goddess Mariamman from the Vaigai River which was then infested with Magizha Maram. This Temple is built opposite to the Theppakulam and it has a South facing Welcome Arch. There are rows of shops selling all sorts of Pooja and Divine articles meant for the Temple. The actual Temple of Vandiyur Mariamman is East facing and it is located in a multi pillared Mandapam. The Temple has a huge tin sheet roofing to save the Devotees from the vageries of Nature. There is a Vembu and Arasa Maram beneath which the Idols of Naga Devathas are displayed. Childless couples who come to this Temple Pray to Her Almighty and tie a wooden cradle on these two Trees. It is firmly believed that these issueless couples would soon bear a lovely kid. This is also the place where Poultry and Cattle are sacrificed to Goddess Mariamman. On the other side of these Viruksham is a East facing Ganapathy Idol along with Naga Devathas. The Temple has a tall Dwajasthambam and a small Neivedhya Peedam. Before the Dwajasthambam an oil lamp is lit and it is called as Anaiyaa Vilakku which means that this lamp glows for all the 24 hours of a day. The Devotees are let in through sepantine steel railings so that they could move in an orderly way without any jostling. Different Amman Images are crafted skillfully in wood work and it is hung there. The threshold of the Moolasthanam is gold plated and looks dazzling to the eyes of the Devotees. Instead of the usual Dwara Baalakas seen in other Temples, there is a Vinayagar Idol and a Murugan Idol to the left and right of the Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Goddess Mariamman is seen East facing and She looks resplendent to the eyes of the onlookers. Though Mariamman and Durga are slightly different they represent here as Ambika. The ceiling of the outer peripheral is beautifully designed in contrast colours. The outer peripheral has a South facing Shrine for Goddess Pechiamman who is seen in a standing posture. Opposite to the Temple there is an exclusive place earmarked for Tonsuring. Devotees who wish to offer Pongal as Prasadam can get it cooked within the Temple premises for which around 10 mud stove have been kept ready. The Temple has facilities for clothes changeover for ladies after they have a bath. There is a Temple Office functioning within its premises. Close to the Welcome Arch is a huge Annadhana Koodam for the sake of Devotees. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Arasa Maram and Veppa Maram and the Pushkarani or Theertham is Vaigai River. It is believed that there are several old channels leading from the Vaigai River to this Theppakulam. It is noteworthy to mention here that the Kings of those years came to this Temple and Prayed before Goddess Mariamman in all earnest before waging any War. It is also said that many a Kings have won such wars with effortless ease after such Prayers. Mariamman Float Festival is celebrated with great fanfare. The Temple Tank is used for Devotional purposes only. Mariamman provides relief to Eye Defects, Small Pox and Childless Couples.
