Kazimar Big Mosque is also called as Kazimar Periya Pallivaasal. This Mosque was built in the year 1284 AD and is standing still for more than seven century. This Mosque was built by Kazi Syed Tajuddin and he is believed to be the descendant of Prophet Mohammed and he had come to Madurai from Yemen in the 13th century. King Kulasekara Pandiyan donated this land to Kazi Syed Tajuddin as a mark of goodwill to build this beautiful Mosque. This Mosque can accommodate nearly 1200 Worshippers at a time. There is a grave for people belonging to Madurai Hazrats inside this Mosque premises. The Anniversary Urus of Periya Hazrat is commemorated on 13th of Ramadan and Chinna Hazrat on 28th of Shawwal. Syed Abdus Salaam Ibrahim Saalim Hazrat's Anniversary is celebrated on the 18th of Rabiul Aakhir.  Inside the Mosque there is Kazi Syed Tajuddin Arabi Madrasah where nearly 120 students learn basic Arabic language.  This Madrasa is managed by Kazimar Big Mosque's Moulavi Hafil Syed Alimullah Baqavi.
