Sri Veeraragava Perumal Temple is located in Vandiyur in Madurai City. The Temple History dates back to the 16th century or even more. It is believed that Thirumalai Naayak who ruled Madurai then excavated the Idol of Sri Veera Raghava Perumal from the Banks of River Vaigai in Vandiyur while on a hunting spree to Kaalaiyar Koil. He immediately made arrangements and had the Idol of Sri Veeraraghava Perumal installed here. This is an East facing Temple and has a recently built three tiered Rajagopuram which measures around 26 feet. The Mandapam leading to the Moolasthanam is massive and impressive and it contains huge symmetrical pillars which have intricate carvings on it. On the right in one of the pillars there is a Krishna Idol embossed on its base and this Idol of Krishna faces Westwards towards the Moolasthanam. There is a Sub Shrine for Anjaneya Swamy who is known here as Anjali Anjaneyar and He faces Southwards in a standing posture in His Sub Shrine. Devotees who enter the Moolasthanam have to climb down three to four steps to reach the Pushpa Pallakku Mandapam. The Dasavathara Images are engraved and decorated as a wood work and the Pallakku is named as Chaithro Ubachaara Pallakku. There are two coloured Dwara Baalaka Idols who look fearsome and the entire threshold is gold plated. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Veera Raghava Perumal is East facing and in a standing posture. He is flanked on either side by Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The gold plated ornaments of the Presiding Deity and His Consorts and the ambience of the Moolasthanam would keep any Devotee spell bound. Vandiyur Veeraraghava Perumal gains more prominence since it is here that Kallazhagar had given a Saabha Vimochanam to Mandooga Maharishi who was cursed by Sage Dhurvaasa. It is the habit of Kallazhagar to visit Vandiyur Veeraraghava Perumal annually during the Chithirai Thiruvizha when He would stay here over night. The next day morning Kallazhagar would adorn Himself with all Gold and Diamond Ornaments in the Chaithro Ubachaara Pallakku and this is called as Ekandha Sevai or Vairamudi Sevai. The outer peripheral of the Temple has an elevated podium which is called as Thaayar Thirumanjana Mandapam. The Consort of Sri Veeraraghava Perumal is known as Sri Kanakavalli Thaayar and She has an East facing Shrine in which Kanakavalli Thaayar could be seen in a standing posture. There is another East facing Sub Shrine in which Chakkarathalwar and Yoga Narasimhar are found back to back. There is a Navagraha Sannadhi in the outer peripheral. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vilva Maram and the Theertham or Pushkarani is Vaigai River. The Temple has a huge Madapalli and a well built Annadhana Koodam. The outer peripherals of the Temple has a cement flooring making it easier for the Devotees to circumambulate. The Temple has Ghoshala facilities. The Temple has a mammoth compound wall and the Temple Nandhavanam too is well maintained. There is ample car parking space opposite to the Temple. Chithirai Thiruvizha, Chithra Pournami, Aadi Pooram and Navarathiri are celebrated here in a most glittering manner.
