Thanthondriswarar Temple was built on the banks of Vasishta Nadhi or River Vasishta. It is believed that the Temple would have been built by the Chola Kings in the 12th Century. It was King Paranthaga Cholan who initiated the Temple construction first. The Rajagopuram stands 97 feet tall and is East facing with 7 tiers. There is a huge multi pillared Mandapam just before the Rajagopuram and on top of this Mandapam there are several colourful Idols displayed. Just below the Rajgopuram are two Elephant Idols with Vinayagar and Murugan Sub Shrine on the left and right respectively. There is a Bali Peedam and a Dwajasthambam which is seen to pierce the roof of the Mandapam and go upwards and next to it is a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. There are two Dwara Baalakas at the threshold of the Sanctum Sanctorum. In the Moolasthanam Sri Thaanthondreeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva is found as a Swayambhumoorthy in the form of a Shiva Lingam facing Eastwards. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Aram Valartha Ammai or Goddess Dharma Samvarthini. The Presiding Deity who is a Swayambu Moorthy and the Sun Rays falls on the Presiding Deity during Chithrai 3rd to 10th. In the later years recently a few members from the Chetty community who were mostly pepper merchants gave a big hand in promoting this Temple. It is believed that Mahabarath Arjuna visited this Temple in order to get the Blessings of Lord Shiva. This Temple is so great that even Lord Maha Vishnu had advised Sage Vasishta to Pray to Lord Shiva here and to perform a Yaagam. Next to the Moolasthanam several important Urchavamoorthis like Venugopala Swamy, Natarajar, Somaskandar etc are kept. In the inner peripheral Pancha Lingam such as 1) Prithivi Lingam, 2) Appu Lingam, 3) Theyu Lingam, 4) Vaayu Lingam and 5) Agasa Lingam are kept. Other than this Idols of the 63 Naayanmaars and a few Shiva Lingams are kept in tandom. Around the Koshtam the Idols of Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar are seen. Such is the greatness of the Presiding Deity Thaanthonriswarar. This Temple has a sculpture of Yazhi and a rolling ball can be seen in it's mouth here. Saneeswara Bhagawan is very powerful and mighty in this Temple and He is seen beneath a Vanni Maram or a Vanni Tree. This Temple has an Idol for Kalyana Vinayakar and He also has more prominence equal to that of the Presiding Deity. Lord Ganapathi is known here as Kalyana Vinayagar and it is widely believed that single Devotees who come and Pray to Him would get married very soon and hence the name for Him. There are Sub Shrines for Sahasra Lingam, Gajalakshmi, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Anjaneyar, Kanam Pulla Naayanar, Pitchandavar and Kaala Bhairavar. There is a Navagraha enclosure too. The Temple has a Madapalli and a Annadhana Koodam. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a combination of Maa, Palaa and Illupai Maram and this is considered very Sacred. At quite a distance from the Rajagopuram is the Temple's Sacred Tank or Pushkarani which is located on the Main Road. Aadi Month, Karthikai, Monthly Pradosham and New Moon Days are celebrated in a grand manner and the Temple attracts a huge number of Devotees from far and near.
