It is one of the ancient Temples of Salem and is built on the banks of River Thirumanimuthar or Manimuthar in Salem. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Goddess Kottai Mari Amman. This Temple is said to be between 300 to 500 years old. This Temple was built by the Chera Kings. It has a huge five tiered Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Kottai Mari Amman because she was considered as the Guardian Deity of Salem Fort during the British period and the period prior to it.

The entrance to the Sanctum Sanctorum is so small and tiny that any Devotees Praying before Her have to bend down a lot more to see Herself in full. The Sanctum Sanctorum has been designed in such a manner that all Devotees Bow before Her. There are nine pillars in the Kaali Mandapam, the bottom of which is beautifully carved depicting a Devotee worshipping the Amman and the other sculpture portrays the story of the Amman fighting all the  Demons using Her legs. As Her name suggests Mari means Rain here. Most Devotees perform Abhishekam on special occasions and during festival times so that this area and other places around it gets a good and bountiful rainfall. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Vinayagar, Sri Muneeswaran, Sri Kaali, Sri Madurai Veeran, Sri Durgai, Sri Karuppannaswamy and others. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Bodhi Tree whereas the Pushkarani is known as Manimutharu or Thirumanimuthar. Those without Kids come here to be Blessed with a Kid sooner than later. This Temple is famous since it is firmly believed that Chicken Pox, Small Pox etc gets cured by Praying here.
