Pannavadi and Nayambadi were two adjacent villages in the Mysore Kingdom during the British era. Both these villages are submerged now deep inside Mettur Dam which is otherwise called as Stanley Reservoir officially. The Villagers of Pannavadi agree that the then Mysore Kingdom had built Sri Jalakandeswarar Temple on the Nayambadi side much ahead of the construction of Mettur Dam. It is said that the Jalakandeshwarar Temple was built more than 300 years ago. Later Father Anthony built a Church with a twin tower in the adjoining area. The British started constructing Mettur Dam or Stanley Reservoir in the year 1934 and it took them 9 years to complete the Project. On completion the entire Pannavadi and Nayambadi village were submerged and engulfed within Mettur Dam. The Villagers and the Officials never razed the Temple but let it exist as such under the water. This Temple which has been inundated by the Dam waters is visible once the water level of Mettur Dam recedes and gets parched due to scarce water supply in River Cauvery. During Summer period the Temple top along with the dilapidated Idol of the Nandhi Vaahanam is visible to the locals who happen to cross the 16 sluice bridge from Mettur Dam R.S. to Salem Camp and vice versa. Lord Jalakandeshwarar is believed to be the Presiding Deity and He is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Some local villagers even make an attempt to swim through or Wade through the silt to reach the Temple during the peak summer. This is banned since it is considered as a life threatening exercise. The Revenue and the Police Officials are totally against these acts of dare devilry. The luckiest of them to view this Temple many times are the former employees of 1) Mettur Beardsell, 2) Mettur Chemicals and Students of Vaideeshwara High School who happen to cross the 16 sluice bridge then.
