Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is situated in Ambalappuzha in Alapuzha District of Kerala. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Krishna or Sri Krishna Swamy. The Temple is believed to have been built in the 17th Century AD by the local Ruler Chembakassery Pooradam Thirunaal Devanarayan Thampuraan. This is a Hindu Temple and the Presiding Deity Sri Krishna is similar to the local warrior Parthasarathy, another form of Maha Vishnu. In this Temple Sri Krishna or Sri Parthasarathy is seen to be holding a Whip in one hand and a Sangu or a Conch in the other hand. This Temple is considered as one among the 108 Divya Desam.

The story behind the Temple is Sri Krishna once appeared before the Ruler of Chembakassery in the form of a Sage challenging him to play a game of Chess or Shathurang. Being an ardent Devotee of Chess the King appected the challenge and lost the game to Sri Krishna. As per the challenge the King was never able to fulfill the Rice demand of the Sage who was none other then Sri Krishna Himself. In this dilemma the King knew that the Sage was Sri Krishna Himself and prostrated to Him. Sri Krishna demanded that the King should instead offer a Payasam or Pradhaman made out of Rice, Sugar and Milk daily to all the Devotees coming to the Temple. This is being fulfilled right till this day. The 10 incarnation of the Dasavatharam are drawn and depicted on the walls of the Temple. Tippu Sultan was particular in destroying Sri Guruvayurappan Temple in Guruvayur and hence to safeguard the Idol of Sri Guruvayurappan, He was brought from Guruvayur to Ambalapuzha and was safely preserved for the following 12 years after that.  Ambalappuzha Temple Festival is also known as Chembakulam Moolam Water Festival. This festival is conducted on the Moolam day of the Mithunam Month in Kerala era. This Temple is closely associated with Sri Guruvayurappan Temple in Guruvayur
