Chowallur is also spelt as Chowalloor and it is located on the outskirts of Guruvayur. This is centuries old ancient Hindu Temple which is West facing. The entire Temple premises is built on an elevated place. It is believed that Sage Parasurama had installed the Shiva Lingam here. It is one of the 108 Shiva Temples located in Kerala and is one among the five famous Shiva Kshethrams close to Guruvayur. The entire Temple premises is built on a whopping 4 acres land and there is a small Welcome Arch leading to the Temple. There are two Elephants, one on either side of the steps leading to the Temple. The Temple does not have any Flag Staff or Dwajasthambam. Instead there is a roofed place with the Images of Lord Shiva, Parvathy, Ganapathy, Murugan and Iyyappan. There is a huge 10 feet Bali Peedam and close to it is a multi layered Oil Lamp facing the Moolasthanam. The Sanctum Sanctorum of Shiva who is also known as Uma Maheswaran or Sri Mahadevan is West facing and circular in shape. On the rear of this Moolasthanam is the Shrine of Goddess Parvathy which is East facing. There is a Sub Shrine for Ganapathy and Iyyappan which is East facing. Apart from this there is a North facing Sub Shrine for the Thenmuga Paraman who is also called as Dhakshinamoorthy or Guru Bhagwan. There is a Shrine for Sapthamathas comprising of Brahmmi, Maheswari, Goumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi. Closeby is the Prasada Counter where Prasadams are offered to the Devotees. In the outer peripheral there is a Sub Shrine for Subramaniyar or Murugan facing East and this Sub Shrine is located on the North West side of the Temple premises. A Navagraha Sannadhi is dedicated in the outer peripheral. The Sub Shrines of Hanuman and Simhodharan (Sivaganangal) is also located in the outer peripheral. There is an exclusive Temple Tank for this Temple. They have a Temple Office with various counters for different Sevas. Devotees could avail the Thulabaaram facilities in this Temple. A mini area is earmarked within the Temple premises and this is known as Uma Maheswara Mandapam. Divine functions and rituals pertaining to the Temple and the Devotees could be conducted here with ease. Opposite to the Temple Office is a Peepal Tree which is considered as very Sacred. Maha Shivarathri, Margazhi Arudhra Darisanam are some of the festivals celebrated in a grand manner. Close to this is the Chowallur Krishna Kshethram which should also be visited by the Devotees.
